A pallet of 120kg is on its way to Casa Frode.

833 and KT88 tubes.
Audio Music AM833M silver ed…
I intend to drive both my woofers and ribbon with these amps.
If not successful I will revert to my bi-amping solution.

Very very nice! Always been interested in these amplifiers. Did you receive them yet? How do they compare to the 805s?

The 833 is a very interesting triode.

Indeed I have!
Not many out there knows about these ‘Wavac-clones’.
The pictures you see are from my man cave.
The sound signature is like the 805, just quieter but with tons of authority.
I am now solo-driving my speakers (bi-amping is not required anymore).
I had to solve the need for cooling because they dissipate a lot of heat.

With these amps I would not hesitate to go toe to toe against any other amps out there.
I am currently looking into the Rogue RP-7 or the PSA BHKs preamp to drive these beasts, but I need the available 20dB gain to assure enough headroom.

I finally decided to buy the Rogue RP-7 preamp.
It will arrive beginning of next week.

I had a Rogue 99 Super Magnum for years . A great company with a great line of products! You’re going to enjoy.

I know, I had the M-180 for years

Here are my first impressions;

It is remarkable how much a good preamp means in the signal chain!
On some parameters, the reproduction is almost transformed.

The first thing that struck me was the absence of noise when the source was paused.
No hiss, buzz and hum no matter what volume.
The sound is very invigorating and light-flowing with a defined and black background.
The presentation is very analog and organic sounding, with an insane bass authority. With the same SPL experience as before, things are being swung in the room that has not come into resonance before.
The sound image never gets hard / cold or strained. You just want to turn the volume knob and pour out music.
I also have more headroom available now.

One would notice that the preamp has tubes, the mids and treble feel a bit softer and retracted compared to solid state, which seems a bit more ‘aggressive’ here. A tube replacement may be rolled in this direction, but it must be without compromising the PraT and the timbres experienced now.

Adjusting the volume is a pleasure to do.
Only point is that I cannot turn on the amp through powering from the P10 regenerator. I’ll just keep it on all the time (in standby) to remember the active source as well as the volume.

Just looking forward to the next listening experience…

Next thing up is XO mod and a dedicated circuit. I will relax chasing equipment now, after installing the supertweeter for my center speaker.

Would you like to share why you choose RP-7 over BHK pre? They share so many things in common.

Well, a couple of things.
Since I was very satisfied with my Rogue M-180 I was intrigued when the RP-series surfaced, however they lacked a fully balanced operation. Then the RP-7 came along and my wait was over. However I thought the price was rather stiff, but based on rave reviews it retained on my buy list. The PSA preamp clearly was also interesting, however I was a bit concerned about the reliability of the volume control and the offer of buying it directly from Norway was no more and it did not match the price I got from buying an RP-7 demo unit.
I have replaced the standard tubes with Siemens-Halske. It cost me about $500.

Hope it helps

Frode

That makes sense.

If you have a second chance, would you like to choose differently when the price is the same?

How do you feel about RP-7 since you bought it?

I appreciate your sharing. Thanks!

I have to do a direct comparison to answer this.
On the remaining I think we may take this on PM.
