My open baffle speakers are finally here

Warming up :)

Frode said Thanks :) I think the review is pretty panegyric beating the MBL Extreme on certain parameters :-O I am not sure about the baffles convex facing forward, but I can ask the designer about this. Anyway, the woofers are AE Speakers Dipole12. Since my room is 16m2, limiting the low end to 42Hz I am extending it to 20Hz with Rytmik F12SE subs. The XO at around 50Hz is pretty seamless.
Hello!

Nice speakers!

Under a number of years I’ve been developing a similar (also nice sounding) speaker:

The ribbon sound is great, and if I drive them without transformer, they’re almost as good as my diy electrostatic speakers!

Very nice, Jonas. I am impressed!

Is it your xo shown on top of the ribbon?

Are you of ‘Scandinavian’ heritage by any chance?

I don’t use high pass crossover or transformer on this model, just a 3 Ohm Diy graphite resistor.

I live in Malmö, but I frequently travel to Oslo (Slattum Terrasse) as I have some relatives there.

I have been building speakers for almost 40 years! I prefer dipoles, as you can see here:

Nice!

Some of the designs looks like Jamo R909.

I see you are not using woofers from AE Speakers.

AE drivers are among the best, but if you consider price and freight, the old Peerless SLS12 is even better!

Another favorite is (was) the Visaton WHC 30X, very light cone and long throw…and out of production…

I have so many components now that I had to invest in a dedicated rack just reserved for my IT infrastructure for my primary system :)

I also use 2 Ethernet bridges and a switch located elsewhere.

My new preamp arrives tomorrow:

Very nice preamp, how did you find it in the amp jungle?

Happy New Year to all at this forum!party_gif

party_gif to you also and all fellow members!

I have had this amp on a trial, and I can tell you it is very special and one of a kind on some features and associated performance.

My dealer of my former preamp tipped me about it.

Right now I’m building a pair tube and transformer driven ribbons speakers, as pictured.

I have some trouble finding the right output tubes for this project, but I think i’ll

try 805a tubes for a starter…

These speakers will be crossovered at 400 hz to a pair of active (maybe also tube driven) dipole towers with six 10 inch Tympani SLS in each.

Looks marvellous :)

Now that is cool looking. Please keep us posted.

Just wondering, still happy with the Soulsonics?

Hi Jonas.

Sorry for my late answering on this one.

My speaker designer came visiting during the summer and built me an uncompromisingly external crossover for my Impact speakers.

I am now bi-amping my speakers, using a custom made Audio-gd Master-10 250W integrated amp for the woofers (with line outputs for my subwoofers and memory for the initial selected channel and volume setting) to blend in perfectly with the tube amp driving the ribbon.

All I can say is that my system now has moved from high-end to uber-highend classification as I see it.

No systems I have heard come even close to the superior and sophisticated sound currently experienced at my place :)

Here is a picture of my test setup:

He’s a fantastic speaker builder, Miro!

regards, Jonas

Now running triode mode on the ribbons and improved sound for the woofers with the new preamp in the woofer-loop.

Burn in is now done, so now I can move the whole woofer amp w/external XO’s (shown inside rack) behind the TV.

Wow I missed a lot on this thread! Great looking speakers, Jonas. I am a bipolar fan, myself and also miss those Peerless and Vistaon drivers! I am currently using drivers from Hawthorne Audio for the bass in an open baffle configuration.

On test stand right now, feeding the DS via RAAT. Music Library residing on my NAS, also running RoonServer (i.e. no ‘computer’).

Can’t wait to hear what you think of this little guy.
