New PS Audio speakers?

I am using Danish Loudspeakers at the moment, I have a pair of system audio pandion 30.

Hello Paul, one of the characteristics of the IRSV which you described as remarkable has always been its “effortlessness”. One of the higligths of the IRSV killers and then of the AN serie of speakers which should position these speakers above the IRSV is the mid bass coupler. You have been describing the mid bass as covering frequencies representing men voice and most of instruments in an orchestra making it, at least for the crowd “who does not know better :)” the perfect candidate for deploying multiple elements and divide the load and provide some of that effortlessness that you regarded as a prominent feature. Instead, on your AN serie, including in the AN1 mocks you seem to have included just one mid bass and instead multiple tweeters and midrange elements. Why is that? I am sure it makes sense, but it comes across as counter intuitive

I’ve never had the pleasure of hearing the Pandion series, but System Audio makes some very fine speakers. Unfortunately they currently have very limited distribution in the US, but I have fond memories of hearing their exceptional SA2K monitors several years ago. Enjoy your SA Pandions in the best of health!

The Disney Concert Hall is amazing acoustically. I try to get there as often as I can. The last concert I attended, the very talented performer commented during the show that the acoustics there were really good, “almost too good” is what she ended with. LOL!

Of course there’s no way to duplicate the 132 drivers of the IRSV in a smaller floor standing speaker like the AN3, so we have to pick and choose where we place our technology. The midbass coupler is a critical element in the AN series design. Because it is
variable via a control on the rear of the speaker, it allows users to hand tune this critical region of sound to both their rooms and their tastes. And because there’s a 700 watt amplifier powering it (unlike the IRSV) we can achieve unrestricted effortless
sound in this all critical area.

The IRS does it with many drivers each working only a portion of the sound. The AN3 does it with clever design in the right places. As for tweeters and midrange,. There the challenge is within the design of the actual drivers themselves.

Yes, it’s a really amazing place. I would attend just about any performance, just for the acoustics.

Do you mean the AN2 could have more than one mid bass driver?

Does each speaker have an AC feed?

How is the speaker development going? Would love to see a picture or two and hear the current elaborations. It’s so interesting to follow the development process!

Small update on design iterations. Now with 2 6.5in woofers as the midbass, the tweeter has moved below the midrange and has a waveguide added. It is now 50 in tall (4.2ft), 20 in deep, and has a front baffle width of 10 in.

I like the thinner profile and smaller base. What midrange driver have you settled with now? It also seems like the midbass drivers are recessed more, or is this just an illusion with the illustration?

Really sweet looking!

The midbass drivers are recessed more as they have significant xmax travel and need space behind the grille. For now we are playing with the BG NEO 10 midrange.

Actually it’ll be a newer (as of yet unreleased) version of the Neo 10 by Igor, the original driver designer. He’s been working on improving this design and we’re excited to be the first to try out his latest work.

Also, note the front grille of the AN3 is now an integrated 1/4" plate both top and bottom.

See the dividing line between the top midrange and tweeter box and the lower woofer cabinet? This has evolved into a two piece assembly which has a number of advantages over the original single box construction. Among them will be easier shipping and setup because the weight is now divided in two parts.

We’ve also brought a new team member into PS Audio to shepherd the speaker design and manufacturing. Chris Brunhaver (from BG among other companies) has really taken our process up a notch.

Exciting stuff.

So…two pieces sharing a single set of side panels, then…?

Not everyone’s cup of tea, I suppose, but I like the aesthetic. I am enjoying following your progress. Must be tough to resist the urge to rush things along… Keep up the great work.

Scott

This is excellent from a shipping and installation point of view. As the AN scales up, this will become even more important.

What is the benefit of the slats in front of the midbass drivers?

Will there be a cover with fabric?

Looks much better and worthier to me now, I just guess it still has no big waf

Does the tweeter placed below midrange mean, the speaker wouldn’t have to be so tall anymore and not higher at the front than back? Would there be more design options now to make it smaller?

Previously we heard the argument that the tweeter must be in the previous height to the listeners ears to be able to put the imaging high enough…

The only thing I still don’t like design-wise is the rising top (if not flat I’d prefer it slightly rising backwards) and the base plate (which is removable anyway). For an acceptable waf there probably always has to be a kind of grill (like the string‘ed one on the old Sonus Faber Guarneri Hommage)
