NuWave Phono Converter

There isn’t really any plan for an A to D converter. Though a great product, there wasn’t much traction behind the A to D aspect.

If you’re in the market for a dedicated phono stage, our new Stellar phono is doing really well on the market and getting some incredible reviews.

No, the demand for A/D converters isn’t all that great. I think it’s time has passed. We went with Stellar Phono instead.

Fortunately it still sounds pretty darn good as just a phonostage.

Agreed. I have never used the ADC capability of mine, and enjoy the phono preamp function a lot.

Hello dears, can someone help me please? I have a rega p6 with rega ania MC cartridge and a NPC .

Can somone tell me how I can adjust and if it is important the capacitance

thanks a lot

#ask-the-experts

There’s no way to adjust the capacitance with the NuWave. You can only adjust the loading and the gain. Unless you’re running into some weird behavior, different capacitance shouldn’t be an issue. If it is, you may want to change the single ended cables you’re using from the TT to the NuWave.

Hello Jamesh thanks a lot for your very quick answare.
No I have no problem with it I only want to be sure to do the proper adjustment

Gotcha. The cart loading is something you can experiment with. 100 ohms will be a good start, but you can play around a little to to make sure it sounds right to you in the system.

Ok Thanks a lot Jamesh I had no idea. I been thinking it was requested exactly like specified as soon I can go back home I will try to test it thanks a lot again for your very precious advise.

Paul/James H-
I currently have and use a nuwave phono converter, using the phone input for my turntable, and use the line out AD input for my tuner, I run them both through my the Directstream DAC, using it as a preamp feeding a Bryston Amp. Is there a way to convert the phone input to a second line out through the AD, and run your new Stellar Phono preamp through that instead of the built-in phono preamp setup? Just thinking out loud…

Dane

No, you cannot change the NuWave phono input but NuWave does have an analog input you can use instead.

How is the analog input labeled? I use the input that switches between phono and analog, is there an additional input, that I could use for the Stellar Phono Preamp, and still run my FM Tuner through the other? Please let me know how to access it.
Thanks!

Dane

On the rear of the unit the “Analog Input” is the RCA connection just above the “Analog Output” RCA connection on the right and left side. These are different than the more prominent “Phono Input” RCA connections in the center of the back.

Using the buttons on the front you can toggle between “Phono” and “Analog”. . . that should be self explanatory.

There isn’t another input that you’ll be able to use. There is only one line in and one phono in. Obviously, you won’t want to feed the Strata’s signal into the phono it. If you have to run the DSD as your pre, I think your best option is to swap the cables when ever you want to change the source.

Or you can use a high quality switchbox.

James-
That’s kind of what I thought, I only remembered two options for inputs. It’s a shame that the directstream DAC doesn’t have an analog passthrough input, I like using it as my pre-amp, but of course everything going into it is digital, hence the usefulness of the NuWave Phono converter.

Thanks for the response!

Anyone else having a problem with USB drivers for their NPC on the latest(?) Windows 10 level?

I’ve had to reinstall my drivers from time to time, but this time I’m just not getting them to work, despite uninstall, delete drivers, delete directory etc. Looking in the event log I see the following, I hope this is just a software/driver issue rather than hardware.

That is scary! I have not used mine in a while but I will use it again…

based on a couple of responses on another thread, I though I’d post this here. I’m of the opinion that the PSAUDIO USB drivers are really the issue.

A short tale.

I have some 2,500 vinyl albums, they were split between the US and my parents house in the UK. I’d retired(after 42 years in software) a few months before my Mum passed away, my sister and I had to clear the house for sale. I had to make a decision about 1500 records that had been in storage since I emigrated in 1983. I decided to keep them.

Once I’d got everything back and together in the US

, I set about digitizing them for use in my in house streaming system, in the car, and out running, travelling etc.

I bought a Soundblaster XFI-HD, plugged in my RCA cables, plugged the USB into the computer and off I went. The Soundblaster also provides an external USB Soundcard from the computer, and is used extensively for streaming and during editing of recorded music. The drivers for the Soundblaster have never ever failed, and never ever had to be re-installed except automatically as part of the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 3-years ago. They still work perfectly today.

Except, the sound into the software to record the records wasn’t great. It was kind of shrill, somewhat unbalanced. A friend recommended getting something more Hi-Fi grade. At the time, 2016, the PSAudio NPC was highly rated, and they are local. I live just 8-miles away.

I went and visited, bought an NPC, and was delighted with the quality of the sound. Since then I’ve done maybe 1,000 records. In that time the NPC hardware failed. I drove up, and it was repaired under warranty. The USB drivers have always been problematical.

You only need to scan the forums here to see how many threads there are that discuss USB driver issues and not just for the NPC. Right now, after wasting probably 8-hours uninstalling, rebooting, replugging, switch-off, switch-on etc. reverting Windows updates, my NPC is nothing more than a phono pre-amp attached to the computer via RCA to the Soundblaster.

FYI, for better or worse I’ve switched to a Music Hall PA2.2, it uses a different USB chip that presents differently on the desktop. I’ll post more details on the other thread I started for alternatives.

I’m going to do a test with the NPC on a Windows 7 system to check it wasn’t a hardware fault, assuming it works OK, I’ll be listing it on ebay for $250 +shipping. Most NPC’s on ebay are over $1,000 some over $2,000. After 5-years mine has done a great job, but all good things come to pass.
