NuWave Phono Converter

Agreed. I just wanted to play with real time click removal on a beat up LP and Audition was what I already had installed. The filter definitely has an adverse impact on the rest of the music, especially at the level needed to eliminate the worst clicks on that recording. If I want to actually record, edit, and keep something, I have better tools at my disposal. My goal was to merely to demonstrate that one can run the signal from the NPC through an outboard processor and back into the stereo and listen to the results as the LP is playing. Perhaps Wavestream 2.0 can include a small suite of filters for doing this.

Stevem2 - thanks for the the information. I have a number of Grisman’s high res recordings and concur with your recommendation.

First review of NPC is here:

Thanks for posting the link to that review, stereophilus. The last part of the review says:

"One final nugget: Nu owners of the NuWave who register their product with at the PS Audio website receive a $200 credit at the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs web store."

How did I miss this when I registered?

Looks like this is a new promotion -- did you buy your NPC with the offer for a MoFi certificate? I just looked at the relevant webpage and if you buy one now the item you add to your shopping cart says "black [or silver] with $200MoFicoupon".

So if we’ve already bought an NPC, we are out of luck on the MoFi promotion? That sucks. :-q

Say it isn’t so, Paul

The idea of a promotion is to get somebody to buy something he or she otherwise might not have. Companies, including PSA, put things on sale periodically but that does not mean they offer refunds t everybody who had previously paid full retail. I’m sorry to have missed the Mo Fi offer too but that’s how it goes. (I also didn’t have to wait until December, which is when the offer apparently takes affect, to start enjoying my NPC.) If PSA wants to do something about this I would be delighted but I’m not expecting anything.

@stevem2

Don’t know about you, but I will gladly trade my “Hand-Tested” certificate for being an early adopter for one of the MoFi certificates. Seems like a fair trade to me :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, sorry guys. I;'d love to give everybody everything but Steven is correct. It’s a special and one we have to pay for (MoFi doesn’t do this for free). We work a deal with our dealers that if they buy X number of NPC’s we then kick in the funds to make the purchase from MoFi. It’s used to increase sales and paid for out of the profits of those sales.

Early adopters don’t always get the benefit of subsequent sales drives, but they get to be first with a new product. Seems normal to me.

@dcastle

Nothing normal about free MoFi vinyl :stuck_out_tongue:

No worries, Paul. You knocked it out of the park with the NPC. I am very very happy with it. B-)

Anyone have idea on a firmware update for NuWave? DSDx128 doesn’t work over USB for me…

http://www.psaudio.com/vanilla/discussion/6462/2xdsd-on-win7-x64-nuwave-phono-setup-problem

I use Audacity but I am not sure it's the best ripper to be honest. I haven't yet figured out how to get it to go higher than 96kHz, which is ok for me because I don't go higher than that, but I am concerned for others who might want to. Also, you have to manually remove the tracks space and make separate files to create an actual album. Pain in the butt.

I am trying to convince the folks at VinylStudio to allow PCM recording at 32bit float, and a DSD64/128 monitoring option for those of us with DSD DACs, especially those DACs which only do DSD over USB w/ DoP.

Also, there was fleeting mention of TheSycon driver upthread…1.61 in the PS Audio .ini jogged my memory. That’s the same version my Auralic Vega DAC uses or used. Could there be a conflict here? I think I’m on 1.67 TheSycon driver now though…

I’m very close to buy a nuwave phono, after so many good reviews of the preamp sound quality and analysis of technical details (passive RIAA, FET amp, XLR output). The preamp part is by far more important to me than the DAC feature. At the same time I have a chance to get a second-hand Cadence phono pre (jeff rowland) at a comparable price. Has anyone of you auditioned both of these amps? Could i have any advice? Thanks kaz

Welcome, kaz!

I do not have relevant experience to share, but I hope someone here can help you out.

Hi Kaz,

I haven’t heard the Cadence, but I have had the NPC in my system since it came out, and it a wonderful pre-amp.

I have it hooked to a VPI Scout II with a Benz Micro Wood SM and love it direct analog into my Anthem D2v. However I also like the flexibility of having it hooked up via I2S into my DirectStream DAC as well. I find this is the way I’m listening most of the time, and the sound between both are almost indistinguishable. So much so in my system that I keep thinking I should pull out the MIT Magnum 2.3s and find them a new home on A’Gon.

Although I’m not spending time ripping my albums I have utilized the analog inputs numerous times with grate sound and success. The NPC has far easier access in my system then my D2v pre-amp. As such, when I’ve had the need to temporarily connect a reel to reel, a cassette deck or when I put my Denon 2900 back into service to play some DVD-A and SACD disks it really shines.

i hope this helped a bit, and good luck with whichever you choose.

T

Thanks a lot T,

it’s a bit difficult choice in front of me now: a product from the past (cadence) quoted as the “very best phono pre in the world” vs the new NWP.

how long the “very best…” mark remains valid? Is it still number one? - that’s the first question

the other one is how much the symmetrical phono input influences the sound? Channel separation, sound field depth and imaging, etc? Will the modern pre (NWP- not balanced input) sound comparably well to the 15 years old, state of the art unit with XLR catritdge-to-preamp wiring?

i have listened to NWP for a while and I’ve enjoyed the sound very much, however the question is “may Cadence be better”?

thanks in advance for your comments, Kaz

Hi Folks,

I am just back in the business of listening to vinyl after about a 35 year hiatus. I decided to try and resurrect a 30 year old vintage B&O 8002 tangential turntable with an equally old MMC-1 cartridge. I chose the NPC due to its reputation as a fine phono preamp and the fact that it would allow for easy digitization of my old vinyl.

After unpacking the old B&O and hooking everything up, I put an old Karla Bonoff album, “Restless Nights”, on the platter hit the “Turn” button on the turntable to see if it still worked. The machine sprang to life and 33.33 appeared on the B&O’s display. So far so good. Now it was time to bite the bullet, so I screwed up my courage and pressed the “Play” button. I was fully prepared for any number of major disasters to hit including the tone arm not responding or the stylus/cantilever assembly collapsing (30 y.o. elastomers, etc.) onto the record surface. As the tangential arm began to seek the lead-in grooves of the first album cut and drop the tone arm, I realized my fears were unfounded as I was presented with some of Karla’s really wonderful vocals as recorded back in 1979. No discernible distortion of any kind was evident and channel separation and balance seemed to be good as well.

The NPC presented a wonderful 3D soundstage that easily eclipsed the relatively modest footprints my B&W N801s used up. The NPC’s ease of setup (gain and cartridge loading) and wide range of connectivity options (I use balanced to my McIntosh equipment) made integration a snap. The NPC is built like a brick “outhouse”, runs very cool, and should last me this rest of this lifetime and beyond. I have a copy of VinylStudio that I am just now beginning to explore the many options available to preserve all my old vinyl.

Many thanks to the guys and gals at PS Audio and to my wife who played Mrs. Claus on this one for the beginnings of a great new year!

dancing-009_gifThanks for letting us know and enjoy!!

I see the Phono Nuwave has now been withdrawn and stock exhausted. It had a good run.

Do PS Audio have a replacement product?

My Nuwave has had problems in the past and I had to bring it in for service, it’s working fine at the moment but just wondering.
