Funny, I recognize the Garrard turntable behind Miles. My grandfather had a similar model, the Synchro Lab SL95.

My father loved his music. When I was a kid I thought his name was Fat Swaller.

Years ago I heard an episode of Marian McParland’s Piano Jazz radio show, and the guest, whose name escapes me, was something of an expert on Waller. He said Waller absolutely hated teaching, and only did it when he was desperately low on money. He said his teaching style was to sit and listen to the student play, then correct the student by using phrases like, “I wouldn’t play it that way if I were you.” :rofl:

I turned my father on to Fats Waller and he loved him too. I’m a big fan. . . I think I have all his recordings.

Here is a pic of probably Fat’s most famous student. I don’t think he minded the lessons too much.
