I was, once. Happy to have been there and the 600’s and FR30’s still rock.
I have the same issue with the remote at about the same distance. I found holding it vertical when changing the volume works best. Looking forward to the new remote mentioned at axpona.
not good
this is a recurring theme…products are not finished
The new remote is RF based and not IR so the position one holds it or points it shouldn’t matter. Can you let me know how the equipment is stacked? The antenna for the remote control is located an the front bottom of the PMG right behind the front panel and we’ve seen that sometimes stacking of eqipment can affect it.
Folks:
Regarding the new remote volume control, when the remote is vertical, as ozon8r suggests, and I lean forward from listening position, I get more range and it works. Otherwise I get less than 3 feet of range. The preAmp is stacked on top of the DS MKII. I am using the Stack Audio EQ feet, which are relatively tall. Everything sits on the Butcher Block Beast two shelf wooden rack system. Another problem with the new remote is that I cant find an Eject button for the PW SACD. I have to use the old remote.
How do I post a JPG pic from my PC?
Just a thought if you haven’t tried already. What happens if you hit stop twice? Does that eject the CD?
I have the PMG Signature Pre on top of my audio cabinet with about one foot of space on either side, a turntable on one side and a tape deck on the other side. I was aware that the remote is RF based. My listening position is about 9-10 feet away. The remote works best held vertical and with a slight tilt either to the right or left.
It would be very sad if the remote is the thing that keeps PMG from becoming a wild success. Wonder if the distance and position related problems were not adequately tested in the R&D phase or if it is in the manufacturing process.
There are a lot of folks rooting for PS Audio to hit it out of the park with the the PMG series, myself included – even though I cannot and probably will not be able to afford upgrading from my current stack.
I discovered another Easter Egg re the new remote. On my system if I use the three O’clock configuration, I get another foot or two of range. Now I don’t have to lean forward from my listening position!
What’s a 3 o’clock configuration?
Sorry for the confusion. What I mean is hold the remote vertically with buttons facing you.
Picture a clock. Rotate the remote clockwise to the three o’clock position. I get an additional 2 feet of range for about 11 feet total.
If you hit stop twice on the new remote, it just stops and starts again. I’ve yet to find any eject button. I have to use the old remote.
I don’t know how the position of the remote could make a difference, all the RF remotes I have can be in any position and still work fine.
Have you tried standing on your head and wiggling your ears?
Thanks, Joe. The old remote won’t work with the new PMG. There is no eject button on the new remote as we ran out of buttons and made the decision that it would be a good one to get rid of since one has to stand next to the eject drawer to retrieve the ejected CD anyway.
That is too bad! I guess it makes sense that the CD has to be retrieved anyway.
Not necessarily. Being able to open and close the draw with the remote was a good way for me to make my cat go bonkers.
The PMG pre is installed with about 1/2 hour on it. We’ve all heard those who say don’t judge it until it has some time on it, even don’t listen until it has some time. (Yeah, who does that!) I listen immediately and expect to hear some good things right away, otherwise I’m dubious about the longer term.
Well even with little time running this is the most significant improvement in memory I have experienced. The PMG is better than the BHK virtually across the board with the greatest improvements in the bass (solidity, tunefulness) and soundstage/image specificity and tonal balance low to high.
Compared to the BHK the PMG has very slightly less transparency, but I expect after more breakin the PMG will reverse this (and likely by a lot). Even without this the performance jump is large enough that tonight I will print out the RMA for the BHK’s return.
I also got the PMG transport today and am in no hurry to unpack it. Maybe tomorrow.
P.S. I hold the remote vertically upward and volume changes easily; works way less well when pointed at the pre. I haven’t tried the other functions.
A major disappointment for me is the lack of numerical keys on the remote, the main way I select tracks on the transport. Having to scroll through will be a pain but I’ll probably get used to it.
Let’s hope so. I would be a bit disappointed if the PMG didn’t smoke the BHK in the transparency department
Other than that, sounds like a big upgrade! Let us know how she settles in
Best,
JP
