I have one jazz combo recording that is slipping my memory at the moment, that I think would be a great addition to the list. Not any of the usual suspects. I wish I could remember what it is. I have it on LP but I’m not at my collection right now.
I spent a quick hour sampling my classical library (just the digital stuff) last night, and made it from A to C. Here are the decent-to-very-good imaging recordings from that group. At the very least, none sound like the players are in the same seat. I don’t know if they’re all available for streaming, but most should be easily found.
MacMillan’s “The Confession of Isobel Gowdie” by Maksymiuk and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. I like this one better than the one MacMillan conducts himself. I was fortunate to hear our Indianapolis Symphony perform this under Marin Alsop many years ago.
Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring by Ozawa and the Boston, one of two exceptional recordings I have of this work. The other is by Andrew Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic on BIS
Here’s the last group. One thing I’ve noticed is that the chances of getting a recording that does an excellent job at imaging seem to increase the more contemporary the work is. I’m not sure if there’s a causal relationship there or not.
And Widman’s Viola Concerto, Tamestit, Harding and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
These are pulled pretty quickly from my classical library - I know there are many more that are perfectly serviceable in sound quality, especially imaging, but it would take weeks to go through them all. I hope there’s something here you enjoy, and that sounds good on your system, too.
