Position Please

Thank you

Anxious about the effort it may take, so be judicious with your time

I have one jazz combo recording that is slipping my memory at the moment, that I think would be a great addition to the list. Not any of the usual suspects. I wish I could remember what it is. I have it on LP but I’m not at my collection right now.

Yeah, sorry about that. I can’t find it on either Qobuz or Tidal. It is worth buying the CD used. It was apparently also on SACD and DVD-A.

I believe Water Lily recordings are not generally available on Qobuz. Those that I have listened to and suggested I have hard copies there of.

I spent a quick hour sampling my classical library (just the digital stuff) last night, and made it from A to C. Here are the decent-to-very-good imaging recordings from that group. At the very least, none sound like the players are in the same seat. I don’t know if they’re all available for streaming, but most should be easily found.

Here’s the first batch:

John Adams’ “Son of Chamber Symphony” by John Adams and the International Contemporary Ensemble.

The American Cello - Paul Tobias, Joann Falletta, Virginia Symphony Orchrstra

Bartok “The Miraculous Mandarin” by Dutoit and the Montreal

Bartok “The Wooden Prince” by Boulez and the CSO

Bartok Concerto for Orchestra by Reiner and the CSO

I will look for them

I’m ready for a session of Bartok.

Update: all were on Qobuz

PS: books about John Adams are wonderful as well

The next batch:

Beethoven/Brahms Violin Concertos, Heifetz, Munch/Reiner, CSO

Jordi Savall’s recent Beethoven cycle has one of the most intimate acoustics and some of the best imaging I’ve heard on these pieces.

Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique by Dutoit and the Montreal

Brahms Piano Concertos, Schiff and The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

all also on Qobuz

Last batch for now:

Dean “Shadow Music,” Brett Dean and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra

Carter Concerto for Orchestra, Oliver Knussen, London Sinfoniette

Chavez Symphonies 1-3, Eduardo Mata, LSO

Coll Violin Concerto, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Gustavo Gimeno, Orchestre Philharmonique Du Luxembourg

Copland “Billy the Kid” & “Rodeo” Morton Gould and His Orchestra

Crumb “A Haunted Landscape” Arthur Weisberg, NY Phil

The Crumb is excellent, as I have an LP version.

MacMillan’s “The Confession of Isobel Gowdie” by Maksymiuk and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. I like this one better than the one MacMillan conducts himself. I was fortunate to hear our Indianapolis Symphony perform this under Marin Alsop many years ago.

Some more still:

Mahler 2 by Kaplan and the Vienna Philharmonic - a great recording, IMO

de Falla’s “Three Cornered Hat” by Previn and the Pittsburgh

No problem - it’s been fun. Getting near the end here…

Prokofiev’s “Alexander Nevsky” by Abbado and the LSO (curiously left off the front cover)

The famous recording of Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances by Johanos and the Dallas Symphony

Shostakovich 5 by Haitink and the Concertgebouw

Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring by Ozawa and the Boston, one of two exceptional recordings I have of this work. The other is by Andrew Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic on BIS

Here’s the last group. One thing I’ve noticed is that the chances of getting a recording that does an excellent job at imaging seem to increase the more contemporary the work is. I’m not sure if there’s a causal relationship there or not.

Stavinsky’s The Firebird, Robert Craft and the Philharmonia Orchestra

Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony, Chailly and the Concertgebouw

Tchaikovsky’s 6th by Mravinsky and the Leningrad Phil

And Widman’s Viola Concerto, Tamestit, Harding and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks

These are pulled pretty quickly from my classical library - I know there are many more that are perfectly serviceable in sound quality, especially imaging, but it would take weeks to go through them all. I hope there’s something here you enjoy, and that sounds good on your system, too.
