Miles Davis spent a year at Juilliard and took lessons from William Vacchiano, Principal Trumpet of the New York Philharmonic, who tried to teach him the art of transposition.
At one point, Mr. Vacchiano pointed to a particular passage and said, “I want you to play this in E trumpet. Now, where does that put your horn?” Miles answered, “Back in the case, man…”
