Recreating the “Live” experience

Tolstoy?

:joy:

There’s something missing from our understanding of how to recreate “live” sound.
It takes no special skills to hear that the saxophone coming out of the third floor window is live. Even with all the ambient noise of the city, it’s immediately obvious. And the same goes for the completely amplified band playing at a street fair. Or the string quartet that sometimes plays at the shopping mall near my house. (talk about reverb bouncing all over the place).
When someone can explain that precisely and in simple terms, we might have to reinvest in our systems.

Exactly correct; it is easy to hear live v. reproduction, no matter the context.

As already asked, why is this?

First one to figure that out buys everyone here new speakers.

It’s very simple: it’s because of time and space:

Spacetime/gravity sustains my brains.

I dropped my pencil. Not long ago that was so easy. Now, not.

If you were in a closed room with 2 doors. 1 door leads to safety. 1 door leads to sudden death. There are 2 guards inside the room also. You are allowed to ask 1 guard only 1 question. What do you say/ask?

I’d remain mum.

Do both guards speak truth?

I love how our threads tend to meander.

I did too, but here’s the reference. :slightly_smiling_face:

I forgot to mention that part. 1 guard ALWAYS lies. 1 guard ALWAYS tells the truth.

Well then I’d pick the guard with the shortest nose.

But the guards are ancient bri ish guards and their noses are covered.

Good thing you clarify, otherwise the question is too easy.

Of course the answer is to ask one guard what the other guard will say.

I must respectfully disagree. With well executed recordings (including no “artistic” meddling by the mixer) of solo singers, when well off axis, like even far to the side of one speaker, a solo singer can fool me into thinking she is actually in my living room. Now I have never met let alone heard in person Eva, Jennifer, or Alison just to name three, the illusion is quite real. Or maybe wishful thinking triggering suspension of disbelief.
