Return bridge or bridge and Directstream?

Glad I decided not to deal with streaming.
Plop a shiny silver disc in the DMP, hit play and relax.

Streaming done right is exceptional. I have ADD with music and I need to find music that fits my fleeting mood. The biggest issue with streaming is ripping all your discs. It’s not hard just time consuming. I find both Tidal and Qobuz invaluable for exposing me to new music finds.

I agree with Watchdog about streaming. It’s nice to have immediate gratification when you hear something on the radio or go to a concert, then look on Tidal or Qobuz and immediately add it to your library. Also nice not to buy Cds or to have them piled up, even if you burn them to a hard disc. The sound quality also can be excellent.

Thanks again for all the advice. The screen shots of Roon settings are really helpful. Most of my settings were similar to those posted but one difference was sample rate conversion which I had enabled. I now have disabled it and am listening to see if it eliminates the pops and ticks and how it effects the sound. Too early to reach a conclusion. More later.

I agree. Streaming has really allowed me to increase the amount of music I listen to and with the Tidal/Qobuz/Roon Nucleus combination I can do it in high quality too.

Some people are more lucky than others. Enjoy your relaxation.

Yes, I agree. Doing it right should be easy. I found the DS/Bridge2 quite robust for streaming, I don’t recall any sound quality issues. Although there were other issues like problematic bridge reset bug, bridge updating, and those sort of things.

Me too. And it has also resulted in me buying more CD’s after discovering new music that I like.

Same here. It just makes me more selective in what I do buy on CD to keep. Also like that on Qobuz you can buy the hires files with a discount if you have the higher tier. For things I like I prefer having the hires files locally.

The buying of physical discs can be hit-and-miss. I heard a Bach Cantata on the car radio that I liked, so I tracked it down on Spotify (of which there were many different performances) and what I heard via 320 kbps streaming made it worthy of purchase on physical disc. I then searched for it on SACD, which I found and bought (on Pentatone classics label). It arrived today and I’ve just played it and it was underwhelming. Unlikely to get another play. I put it down to the fact that the original recording was made in 1974 and thus the technology of the day, and the passage of time, has killed it. Certainly in comparison to what I heard on Spotify. If I was to find a more recent performance on CD would likely flog - sound quality wise - a SACD transfer of a 1974 recording.

A progress report on the clicks and pops using the bridge:
-there’s still no problem using the USB input except on DSD recordings where the noises do appear
-I disabled sample rate conversion in Roon and, while it’s a little early to reach a definite conclusion, I haven’t been hearing the ticks and pops except with DSD recordings.
-as I posted earlier, I didn’t hear them using Mcontrol.
I need to decide what to do within the next week—keep both the DS and bridge, return both, or return only the bridge. I will continue listening to be certain the problem doesn’t appear with the bridge input and sample rate conversion disabled. If the good news continues, I probably will keep both. I also may order the Matrix. I know it would be like having a belt and suspenders but there are so many Matrix enthusiasts and it’s so reasonable— costs less than some system minor
tweaks—that I’m tempted to try it. Besides, I understand there are all kinds of Matrix club benefits!
Thank you again drarifakhtar for the Roon screenshots and other tips, Paul for your advice and for the customer service which PS Audio has provided, and to everyone else who has helped.
