Stellar amp choice - S300 or M700

Do you have sufficient hours on the M700s? I found they needed about 200 hours of use to show their benefits the best.

Since working from home during the virus, I am putting in at least 15 hours per day 7 days a week. Over 300 hours by now. I think it is me. I feel somehow inferior as I should be loving them so much more than the S300.

But I have a rule that if I have to squint real hard to perceive a difference, it is not worth the extra money.

There’s no question it’s a jump in price. I’ve never heard the S300, so I can’t offer any insights as to differences between it and the 700s. I just know I loved what the 700s brought that I wasn’t getting in my old Emotiva. I’d say if you’re not hearing a difference by now, or enough of a difference, and if you’re happy with your speakers and don’t plan to change them, then you could probably spend that extra money someplace else to better effect. That’s just me, anyway.

As you are squinting, I would return them.

An excellent rule of thumb/eyes.

Seems you’ve been able to put more than sufficient hours on those guys. I’ve heard the 300 and 700s in a number of different systems and think the 700s are a pretty big step up. The level of improvement can certainly be dependent on the system. If you’re needing to squint in order to recognize the difference, maybe the 300 is just fine in you’re system, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I feel so inadequate haha.

I think so too. Thanks.

I have to say. The next owner of these m700’s will get perfectly broken in units.

@scott.wright When you do breaking in the M700s, do you have to get it played all time at certain volume level or just let them there with power ON is sufficient enough ?
Mine is coming in next two days after custom clearance.
Have to use the CXN V2 for digital preamp and streamer while waiting the GCD coming next two weeks together with AQ rocket 33 bi-wire speaker cable, man , it’s damn slow shipping.
So exicited now.

Hi. It seems that just playing anything through them at any level is good enough. I love my amps. It is just that fir me and my listening situation, the S300 are good. I think what it is is my speakers are not up to it. But I truly do like them. When I first heard Eva Cassidy the other day, I nearly cried. It was very emotional. Give her a ,Osten if you have not heard. Anyway. Best of luck.

Another thing. Yo Abe to run a signal to them. On is not enough. But it doesn’t need to be very loud.

Yeah, having the M700s and the GCD preamp but need to have the decent speaker as well, mine are Monitor Audio Silver 100 bookshelf but i’m thinking to upgrade it soon with the Gold 200 standingfloor, or at least gold 100 bookshelf, but that will take a while.

These would pair beautifully with your Stellar stack!

I’m a fan of Monitor Audio Platium and Gold lines

@jamesh :
My living room where the speaker place is just about 14feet x 17 feet ( flat) so the 120w bookself is pretty much for audio, i’m considering to replace the current MA silver 100 by Gold 100 but nore sure if any big step up on this upgrade. ( all technical spec is nearly the same except 4ohm vs 8ohm, and having the planar trebb )
Gold 200 is 3 ways and almost double in price ( still thinking about it)

The Gold 200s are great. Though the bass response needs a bit of help on the lower end, the highs and mids are sweet and rich. Double the price is always tough though.

yeah, so i just stay with silver 100 for now and do the big upgrade later with allowed budget.
audiophile is kinda of “road of perdition” of money.

When I was shopping for speakers I did a side by side listen of Silver 300s and the Gold 200s, and the Gold 200s were so much better.

My room’s also about 14x17 (x8’-8”). It’s a great space for my SGCD, M700s and Maggie .7s.

Good to hear—mine is 12X18, with 8.8 ceilings—and SGCD and M700s and Maggies are on my wish/lust list.
