I have a very good tube preamplifier that I’m using with a pair of ancient Leak TL/12 Plus tube monoblocks in my basement system. The system sounds wonderful for much of the acoustic jazz that I listen to, but in louder or denser passages, the sonics can get a bit harsh and congested.
So I got thinking that perhaps a more powerful, solid state amplifier (the Leak monblocks deliver a measly 12W each) might solve the problem. To wit, I found a Stellar S300 amp here locally for a - ahem! - stellar price, and am thinking that it might fit the bill.
So, my question is for those members who’ve used tube preamps in conjunction with solid state amps: Does this move make sense - or am I being foolish?
NB - Just to forestall any worries you might have that I’m contemplating getting rid of my Leaks, I can assure you that I’m not. They’re just too damn pretty!
