Awesome
The Spanish re-issue on WaxTime, leading off with Can’t We Be Friends?
Whaaat…!
Bernie couldn’t find his white socks, with Birkies?
This just showed up from Stockholm, waiting for the tubes to warm up before giving it a listen.
Anna Högberg Attack-Lena
I had to search for details on this one! Free Jazz Collective has a nice overview, sounds intense. Buckle Up!
Their first release was beyond intense, as a friend said prior to listening “don a flak jacket…”
Marc Johnson bass, Joey Baron drums. Excellent.
So, what’s the verdict? Was it everything you expected ?
It has been a while since I have listened to Kenny Werner, too long after listening through the first track of this seemingly well recorded release. Suggestions such as this are what I most enjoy about this thread.
Alex Sipiagin played on the Dave Pietro cd, so a logical transition. This one has some interesting electronics courtesy of John Escreet. Something called a Prophet 6 synthesizer.
Perfect mic for recording trumpet (a ribbon).
Rudi Mahall on bass clarinet is killing it on 17 West as is Aki Takase’s piano work.
This merits repeated listening.
After a second listen to Anna Hogberg Attack’s - Lena I can say this is a challenging listen. Rooted in the 1960’s Free Jazz Movement the LP starts off with Anna on alto sax calling the group to formation. Pianist Lisa Ullen plays in a percussive manner, reflecting the style of mid sixties Cecil Taylor. Recommended for fans of 1960’s Free Jazz or those wishing to explore beyond the groove based jazz of the 1960s.
Moving on to something a little more main stream:
A 1981 Concord release of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers featuring Wynton Marsalis.
Bill Pierce’s tenor and Wynton’s trumpet on E.T.A. is not to be missed. This is a fine example of Blakey’s later Hard Bop sound.
Free Jazz ensemble From Wolves to Whales LP Dead Leaves Drop on the Dropa Disc Label, #007, featuring Nate Wooley, Dave Rempis, Pascal Niggenkemper, and Chris Corsano. Free Jazz back to the early sixties sound of Ornette Coleman.
Open Borders a limited release LP on Audiographic Records, AGR-018.
Open Borders feature Luigi Ceccarelli, Ken Vandermark, Hamid Drake, and Gianni Trovalusci.
Picked up Handscapes/The Piano Choir featuring Stanley Cowell on the Strata-East Label. My copy is the Pure Pleasure Analog reissue. The sound is fine with quiet flat vinyl. The original was released in 1973, a soulful/spiritual free jazz performance.
New(ish) release on Libra. Apparently the album was developed by exchanging sound files between Fujii/Tamara in Japan and Mori in New York. Very cool collision of piano and trumpet with laptop/electronics. Sounds great.
Interesting, had not heard of this one, I have their other 2 releases on Aerophonic. I may have to spring for this.
