Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 1)

“Labyrinthine purposelessness,” a brilliant phrase.

They knew how to write reviews back then.

I wonder who that DownBeat reviewer was. BTW I too enjoy Our Man in Jazz. It’s been a while since I have listened to it. I have the following and based on your post am now considering picking up Live at the Village Gate, they were on my wish list but some how were forgotten:

Playing Mingus! on a German Candid reissue LP. Featuring MDM (Monk Duke Me), Stormy Weather, and Lock’Em Up! Players include Eric Dolphy, Ted Curson, Dannie Richmond, Charlie McPherson, Paul Bley, Nico Bunick, Booker Ervin, Jimmy Knepper, Britt Woodman, and Lonnie Hillyer. This LP was recorded following Mingus’s release from Bellevue. The story goes that he went to Bellevue due to some malaise, and was seeking care. The Bellevue Staff evaluation resulted in Charles being committed, probably attributable to his rather volatile personality. Lock "Em Up! summarizes Charles view on the matter rather nicely.

This came out in 2020, real nice 2nd album by Master Oogway, a Norwegian fusion quartet on the incredible Rune Grammofon label.

Idle Hands “Solid Moments” Positone Records cd

Same instrumentation as Grant Green’s “Idle Moments” and perhaps an homage to that LP and perhaps also his “Solid” LP. Pretty nice.

‘This cd is defective’.

A friend of mine worked in a record store at the time when this album was released. They had a LOT of attempted returns. One young lady told him that the cd did not play correctly.

Fabiano do Nascimento “Danca Dos Tempos”

Dusty Groove describes this nicely, but doesn’t mention how great this disc sounds. (Well, it has the usual Dusty Groove “extra seasoning” in the description.)

“A contemporary record, but one that’s got an amazingly timeless feel – like the best early 70s material from Brazilian artists like Airto, Hermeto Pascoal, or Egberto Gismonti! The music of Fabiano Do Nascimento has a similar genre-breaking quality to these giants – not straight jazz, but very jazzy in parts – not traditional Brazilian roots, either – but very schooled in the strongest elements from decades of creativity on that scene – all wrapped up in this fresh, new blend that’s completely mesmerizing right from the start! Most instrumentation is acoustic, and relatively simple – guitar, percussion, drums, and vocals – but the arrangements are wonderful, and fold these familiar elements together in ways that are completely unique. The legendary Airto guests on the record – but the vision here is clearly that of Fabiano Do Nascimento – as he mixes together works by Hermeto Pascoal, Baden Powell, and other Brazilian composers with some bold new ideas of his own.”

Nice cheery jazz suitable for a lite breakfast and a cup of joe.

The cut Maxwell Street is especially fine. Reminds me of Chicago’s Maxwell Street Open Market, less the polish and grilled onions on a bun, that is.

Well what would one expect when playing it on their turntable, :stuck_out_tongue:

Another strong effort from Jaimie Branch with the Dave Gissler Trio, Zurich Concert on Intakt. At times a bit of a Rock influence to the Dave Gisler Trio.

Dave Gisler Trio Rabbitt Run, reminds me, slightly, of John Abercrombie’s Gateway and Character series on ecm. Fans of Abercrombie should give Dave Gisler a listen.

John Abercrombie’s Characters. Less splash and more finesse, solo.

I believe this was Lee’s last album, he died last April due to complications from COVID-19. Nice sounding set of tunes arranged for a large group. On the Sunnyside label.

Randy Weston “The Spirits of our Ancestors” disc 2

A few years ago I overdosed on Weston and haven’t played him a lot since. A mistake. Life is better with Weston in it. I love his writing and playing, and Melba Liston arranges wonderfully for his compositions.

Another strong Weston/Liston session, Volcano Blues.

Yes, I’ve had that one since it first came out. In fact I think I have most every official Weston release. . . and more than two dozen unofficial ones. I’m a fan.
