The Thelonious Monk Quartet “Monk’s Dream” Mobile Fidelity SACD
Music I love in excellent sound.
Freddie Hubbard “Straight Life” CTI King Japan “50th Anniversary” cd
Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Jazz Center Orchestra “The Abyssinian Mass”
Been too long since I spun this one. Sure makes the system sweat a bit! And has some very moving portions, at least for me.
Released just over 51 years ago. Makes me feel old remembering how young I was when I first encountered this release and what it has meant on my musical journey all these years.
Miles Davis “Bitches Brew” disc 2
Sony quad/stereo SACD release
Man, “Bitches Brew.” This release is like a time machine. Whenever I play it I am transported somewhere in my past, returned to the vivid sound of the present, and then hearing the future STILL within this music. This music is embedded in my brain and transcends reason.
Classic and mellow John Coltrane with Donald Byrd, Red Garland, Paul Chambers or Earl May, Art Taylor, Louis Hayes or Al Heath featured on this SACD.
Live Air, featuring Henry Threadgill, Fred Hopkins and Steve McCall with a tribute piece to Leo Wadada Smith, Portrait of Leo Smith.
Hey Lon, how does the SACD compare to regular CD? The other Miles SACDs I have are amazing. Been thinking about picking this one up on SACD.
What a strong line-up and I like what Eric Dolphy brings to the line-up across the board on this. Eric is definitely Out There! An excellent example is Eric’s solo following Freddie Hubbard on Butch and Butch.
This came in the mail on Friday, but just getting around to listening. Good stuff. The remastering sounds great, too.
Two ways–this is the original mix and the most recent US cd is aremix, and the sound is really really good, more analog sounding on the DSD layer.
@lonson do you like it more than the MFSL SACD?
I love them both. This one is just a tad more lively and the MSFL just a tad warmer. I have so many copies of this release on vinly, cd and SACD!
Thanks Lon! I’m the same way with KOB.
