Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 2)

The Complete Louis Armstrong Columbia and RCA Victor Studio Sessions 1946-1966

Disc 7, “The Real Ambassadors”

“The Real Ambassadors” gets short shrift but it’s an interesting album.

The OG vinyl is no slouch either.

Early Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley In Chicago, the Acoustic Sounds vinyl reissue is well worth seeking out.

Steve Lacy The Straight Horn of Steve Lacy, an interesting quartet with Charles Davis on baritone sax, John Ore and Roy Haynes. Lacy offers up some fine interpretations of Thelonious Monk, Cecil Taylor and Charlie Parker. I must like this one as this happens to be my fourth copy, and the Candid reissue is a significant sonic improvement over my 1977 Barnaby reissue.

Sure, but I’m not collecting those. Too hard to find here, too pricey.

I thought others may be interested. No more pricey than the SHM-CDs.

Happy birthday Roscoe Mitchell, 83 years old and still blasting!

Not your father’s jazz and possibly not your jazz, but possibly the jazz of the future. Millennials dig it, and Rob/Damon continue to play to SRO crowds. To describe the effort is a bit elusive, but Chicago House Clashes with Chicago oriented avant garde is the best I can come up with, and a message to boot.

The adventurous will be sure to seek it out.

I’ve neglected Cal Tjader too long, lots of great music in his catalog.

Chick Corea “Remembering Bud Powell”

Sad to realize Chick and Wallace are gone. Maybe Roy will make 100 and beyond!

New Terrace Martin recording on Qobuz. Enough A-list jazz players to keep it interesting.
