Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 2)

Playing in my backyard this upcoming weekend. Chicago, December 6, Madison, December 7, Milwaukee December 8. Those in the are would be well served to catch this quartet. Need I add, you will be supporting local musicians and venues that appreciate your attendance.

I tend to place a qualifier on Sun Ra recording releases as they can fall short sonically. Sun Ra Lights on a Satellite; Live at the Left Bank, while not necessarily an audiophile recording, is sonically solid. This set reflects a strong Arkestra of 1978, probably at their peak, and certainly most accessible. A fine companion to another exceelent live Arkestra recording, Sun Ra Arkestra Live at Montreux.

What a fine sounding ORG LP release, Sahib Shihab, Shaib’s Jazz Party & After Hours. Much finer sounding than the Qobuz stream. The performance is exceptional.

Bill Evans In Norway The Kongsberg Concert. An excellent trio set from 1970. So glad to have this on vinyl. I wonder just how much quality Bill Evans remains in the vault?

Yet another RSD Black Friday addition to the collection, Charles Tolliver Music Inc, Live at the Captain’s Cabin. Featuring John Hicks, Clint Houston, and Clifford Barbaro. Not familiar with Clint Houston or Clifford Barbaro, thay do a fine job and do not step on Charles or John. John Hicks is in especially fine form on the opener, Black Vibrations.

That was the only RSD title that I wanted….probably will need to pay a ton of money for it.

The two cd set of the Tolliver is already out if that’s an option.

Yet another opportunity to hear the wonderful Booker Little on Max Roach Deeds Not Words. This RSD BF mono reissue is a fine sounding addition to my collection even though it duplicates an inferior sounding 1987 OJC LP reissue.

Worth seeking out, as are the Sun Ra and the Shahib Shihab. I reluctantly picked up the Dave Douglas Gifts, on a whim. His most recent work has left me wanting. The inclusion of James Brandon Lewis was the hook.

Lights on a Satellite

No surprise regarding this one:
Shahib Shihab

Charles Tolliver - Live at the Captain’s Cabin

Then there is this. Being a Bill Evans fan I just couldn’t pass on it, and after a first listen Iaam glad I didn’t pass on this one.
