Miles Davis did not think Gamal was a cocktail lounge pianist!
Great thread.
What all “What am I listening to” threads should be.
Good for Miles, but some of Jamal’s sets do sound a bit “lounge" to my ears. I still enjoy his playing.
Thanks!
Soundcraft released quite a few very nice albums back in the day. Sweet Moods of Jazz with Coleman Hawkins, Henry “Red” Allen, Marty Napoleon, George Wettling, Earl Warren, and Chubby Jackson was one of them. Recorded in New York on Thursday, August 7, 1958, this HDTT reissue comes from a Soundcraft 2-track tape.
What a great album. Two accomplished musicians leaving nothing missing. And both musicians are truly right in the room with you.
AP reissue.
That’s about as live in the studio as you get. I love the banter.
Atzko Kohashi’s Lujon. Beautifully recorded, meditative jazz trio album —perfect for late-night listening.
I find her other albums especially the duets with bassist Tony Overwater equally fascinating!
