Everyone has different ears, systems and preferences. It’s great that you can revert to Windom and be happy.

The PRaT appears to have been given new orders by some form of sonic alchemy, less words, more listening, more there, more real, astonishingly alive soundstage… Thank You Ted and the A team at PSA :+1: :+1:

Fortunately I’ve never had the need to dab blood from my ears. (I have a pair of 800Ds.) I must have just lucked into good synergy with my system.

The same here. No complaints (or bleeding ears) here. I have 800Ds and a full PS Audio setup. I couldn’t ask for better.!

With Sunlight complex overtones become more complex in their sound reproduction. The Indian Sitar contains of many sympathetic strings. They create a lot of overtones. Using a normal PCM-DAC these overtones become glary, loud and harsh. Very much unrealistic. With Sunlight and DSD Sr. the sound was improved again by reproducing a Sitar more realistic, very clear, complex and well structured but dynamically robust and never stressfull. Also with really good colours in tonality. Great. Thank You very much indeed to all at PS Audio …

I come to these forums usually only if I have a problem that needs resolving (rare) so I had to reset my password - it’s been that long!

I’m a vinyl nut and digital is strictly ā€˜supplementary’ to my normal listening routine - for music that’s unavailable on vinyl. I installed the Sunlight upgrade not expecting that state of affairs to change much. Boy did I get a pleasant surprise! This really has taken the sound of the Directstream DAC to a new level for me. I’ve been ā€˜rediscovering my CD collection’ over the last few days and am choosing to listen to the DAC purely for the pleasure I’m getting out of it.

I could try and describe the upgrade but really it boils down to it getting considerably closer to the things I enjoy about vinyl - and my vinyl rig costs about five times what my digital components (transport + DAC) cost. Thank you team PS Audio for this truly stunning free gift!

I listen to quite a few ā€˜unofficial’ live recordings and I am amazed how good even they sound with this Sunlight upgrade. And as you say, with the well recorded stuff, it’s hard to imagine it sounding better.

MikeK and KevinA, I probably should not have used B&W in my example. They are great loudspeakers but just not my cup of tea for long term listening as their diamond tweeters fatigue my ears. Their clarity is second to none though. No disrespect meant. Plenty of people criticize my GoldenEar Triton One loudspeakers but they work exceptionally well for my ears. To each his own. Rock on…

I love listening to well recorded Live concerts with Sunlight, so much more
presence and ambiance. Also, crappy recorded CDs are more tolerable
than Windom.

Nice, I can imagine that a little bit more prominent top end would complement those speakers perfectly.

I use three different models from Spendor D series and also the SA1 across three systems. The SA1 is similar to classic series. I use silver speaker cables with the SA1 because the tweeter doesn’t have the top-end extension that the tweeter with D series does (which some Spendor fans find to be too much).

It’s not the computer code burning-in.
It’s some ā€˜not used before elements’ in the FPGA hardware that are used for the first time with this new software, that need some burn-in.

Agreed. And thanks for circling back to ensure understanding.

Understanding only the most basic concepts of FPGAs, it was simply another unexplainable ā€˜dont ask, just try it’ moment in my journey.

Warning, take this post with a grain of salt. I’ve been doing a lot of flip flopping on the virtues of Sunshine. Could be the time of day I listen, or weak links in my system. Or perhaps I’m losing my mind.

I’m coming across more and more of my CDs where the top end is exhibiting glare via Sunlight.

Was listening to Chicago Transit authority, and the trumpets drove me out of the room. I toed the speakers out further but it still didn’t help. Switched back to Windom and the trumpets were no longer a problem.

I’m using all PS Audio gear. PST, DSD Sr, BHK preamp and 250. Speakers are Alta Alec.
Have a new HDMI cable showing up today that should be an improvement over the stock one.
Still need to upgrade some XLR ics and power cords that I suspect are weak links in my system.
Hopefully a few tweaks here and there, and Sunshine will gel with more of my music collection.

I had a similar experience. The solution was to let Sunlight play nonstop for about a week. When not listening, I shut off my amp and set my transport to repeat overnight. That did it for me. All harshness is gone.

You might try getting a Factory Issued SD Card from PS Audio ($29). My friend had your same issues, but when he got Sunlight from PS Audio his problems disappeared. He loves it now.

I’ve been doing that non-stop since I downloaded Sunlight a little over a week ago.

Interesting. Maybe Ted could weigh in on this. It shows on the DSD display that Sunlight has loaded. I may be mistaken but I thought I heard Ted say that that’s not a possibility with Sunlight like it was with Windom.
