SuperBowl in native 4k

In case anyone does not know, the 2026 SuperBowl will be broadcast in native 4k HDR. I don’t know all possible ways to watch, but know the Peacock app and YoutubeTV with 4k add-on package are two of the ways to watch in full 4k.

I have seen several college football games that were captured in 1080 and upscaled to 4k. Those games looked fantastic, so am eager to watch a native 4k sporting event. The Olympics will also be available in 4k.

As a non-video person I have not kept up with the technology. I remain delighted with my 15 year old Bravia. My only video source is local stations over the air digital.

But curiosity took over. I went to a local Best Buy for a demo. 4K is impressive. I can literally see the appeal.

I have an OTA rabbit ear antenna as my main source. Will subscribe to peacock TV for the Olympics and SuperBowl.

I do watch some movies at home in 4k. Picture quality in 4k is very appealing, and this is one of the rare occasions where a native 4k broadcast will be available.

We have a 16 months old 75” 4k OLED Sony, does that count?

Too bad one of teams I really do not like, so I may watch LPGA golf instead.

My kids chipped in for Christmas to help me upgrade my aging Warhorse (50" Panasonic Viera Plasma TV) to a new 65" Sony Bravia 8 II OLED TV. With the right material, it is pretty amazing; and 65 is startlingly bigger than 50 and more immersive in my system.

FWIW.

Ouch!!! The picture quality of the game (football) might just be the best picture quality ever of live tv.

Yup, I know!

I can actually read the putting from the green slopes. The grass looks so real.

Wait, that is still golf.

My 15 year old Panasonic died in October. I was happy with it. However, when I replaced it with an LG G5 OLED I was dazzled. The improved detail is pretty amazing, not to mention the vivid colors, especially when watching technicolor movies. When the screen goes completely white it almost hurts my eyes. However, it’s not perfect. On some program material I see the soap opera effect where people and scenery look plastic-y. Still, I have to say it’s been a huge upgrade. Also, I believe the power consumption is a quarter of what the plasma drew, even though I went from a 65” to an 83”.

You can turn off the motion effect in the settings. That will fix the funky plastic motion look. I have an LG OLED and a Samsung Qdot LED and like ‘em both.

Motion effect and similar setting options are ridiculously horrible. Stupid.

After watching some soccer today, supposedly in 4k HDR on the Peacock app, and watching the LA Lakers at New York Knicks in both Peacock app and local ota in High Definition, I have concerns about NBC’s picture quality for the 4k feed of the SuperBowl on the app. The basketball game looks much better on the ota than streaming on the app.

The 4k Olympic feed looks quite nice. Picture quality on NBC is good, but the 4k feed on Peacock is ultra sharp. Wow!!!

Great, I can watch that instead of golf. No Superbowl for me this year since I am not too crazy about either team. I hope Lindsey Vonn will not crash downhill again.

The game will be worth it just for the 4k picture quality. Oh, and the PowerZone is powering my 4k TV

Picture quality of the SuperBowl was outstanding over the 4k feed. I wish the game was a better game, but at least it looked fantastic.

Also got to play some music that 20-something year olds listen to. They are only used to hearing music on their phones, Bluetooth speakers or ear buds, and were shocked at hearing their music on real speakers. One experience won’t turn them into audiophiles, but young people seem to know nothing about this world or even that this audiophile world exists.

Olympics curling looked great on big Sony OLED too! I switched channels before half time. NE could not do anything right, but they did better than the 49ers against Seahawks (twice).

Kids are visiting from NY (so warm here). Last time they were here I did not have Stealth CGLE PC, Audience FRR IC, and the two PMGs. So, I explained to them about the new improvement (without mentioning costs) and played a few songs. Did they hear the differences? It was a resounding NO!

Oh well, it is a lonely hobby for oldies.

I have never been interested in football. But I enjoyed seeing the Patriots get a beating. So fun to watch!

I loved the Bad Bunny half time show on my fourteen or so year old Sony!

I loved it also. It gave me plenty of time to get the dog out go to the bathroom and refresh my beverage to get back downstairs and have my friend look like he wished I switched to the Puppy Bowl.

I thought it was a brilliantly coordinated and executed piece with a fantastic message. I no longer have a dog so didn’t need to try to avoid it. My last dog unfortunately was a lovable disaster.
