Indeed! Remembrance Day (11th November) down here in Aus. Marking the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I. Also a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty.

Salute to all my fellow veterans out there. Thank you for your service to our country. I served in the U.S.Air Force from 1978 to 1983 stateside and overseas. I needed a challenge in my life at that time. No better place! Now that I look back, it was the best time of my life. Though I wouldn’t have said so back then!!

Thank you for chiming in. I went AF about the same time you did, just a tad earlier.

Enjoy the day! And thank you for your service.

For any fellow veterans that may not already be aware, there is a web site Together We Served that provides a convenient portal for reconnecting with vets (all military branches) from our active service days. There are quite a few other features of the site, but I find the reconnection ability to be the most useful with over 2.5M registered users. The site also has a large collection of group photos from Basic Training that can be quite, shall we say, “entertaining”.

Most overseas bases in the 70’s had audio clubs that, in my case at least, were largely responsible for planting the seeds of this life long hobby.

I served in the Navy aboard the USS Saratoga (CV-60) between 1981-1985.

I recently attended the 72nd reunion for the ship in Jacksonville, FL and met up with four of my closest friend when I served. Two of them I had not seen in person since 1985. It was a great time and our spouses all got to meet for the first time. We are all planning to do it again next year in Nashville and I have already recruited two more shipmates to attend.

Thats great to hear. Really cool your reunion may of sparked an annual event.

Nashville is a great place for a meet up! Thanks for your service …

Seeing guys you served with for the first time in over 40 years is an emotional experience. Bonds that will never end no matter how long or how far away. Still trying to get our group rounded up in one place.

My first two pieces of audiophile equipment were bought out of the AAFES catalogue while I was overseas in the Azores. A Technics SU-V9 integrated amp and SL-QL1 (“close & play”) turntable. We raided the BX once a month when new shipments of albums would come in! With no where to go, music was our therapy.

Great to hear about the tie of music and your time in the military. I think music helps a lot of us in life in general. Tough times and not so tough times. I am still in touch with some folks I went to school with and one I served with. Many are gone. However I was not aware of Together We Served so who knows…

Convince those folks to meet up! Be worth it I’m sure for an evening. I remember I had a “Quad” stereo at one location and would crank that whenever I could. That was a big deal back then… did not last long lol. I did not have anywhere really to go either. And, might be out 2-3 days then back 6. Long time to be idle at that age.
