This discussion is a bit like deciding whether to have curtains or blinds in my new condo on Mars.
This DAC doesn’t have a case, a screen, apparently not a lot of software and the boards are in the post.

But apart from that, it’s all done!
Not to be disrespectful but I just laughed my eyes out. I hope when it is ready that it will be a landmark ! A true reference
They’ve probably done the instruction manual, featuring a fat little man with no hair holding a Hex key.
However many parts, you only ever get one Hex key.
Don’t worry about the MSB. I hope the TSS is the best DAC to date.
If Ted was hurting for the consultancy fees I expect it might be quicker, but I like the fact it seems to be a labour of love:)
(Note, arrogant of me to assume either way really)
Ted has a great sense of humor, in fact you may hear him chuckling now.
Chas
I am just guessing he honestly enjoys doing this and is not looking for the paycheck.
I am also guessing it is a lot further out than everyone thinks. Just a hunch.
Hoping for a LOT of trickle down benefit for our Directstreams in upcoming Firmware updates…
This is the way.
Actually, Ted has said for the DS he was not paid up front, rather he got a portion of each DS sold. I would suspect this is how the TSS is being developed. i.e., out of Ted’s own pocket. Most likely he has other projects he is working on which pay the bills.
that sounds about right - he brought the first prototype to PS Audio (via Gus, I think) already built
I believe it was a breadboard prototype. PS Audio took the “guts” and turned it into the DS, i.e., they produced the case, the boards, and the display. Ted is a true friend to us common folk.
agreed - even a breadboard prototype will not have been cheap (i
recall a discussion on the pricing of the crystals he had to have made, for example)
Sort of.
The “breadboard”:
I’m hoping a few in-depth videos are produced once the product launches.
An artisanal breadboard? I was going on memory, probably of Paul, but maybe you, talking about the “state” of the original prototype that so excited Gus and Paul. Obviously I forgot (or didn’t know) about what happened in the interim until the DS was unleashed on the world! Thank you for all you do and continue to do!
I’m pretty sure there will be videos before the release (and perhaps some teasers before that.)
The part that really impressed Paul was that I was going USB to S/PDIF to TOSLink with cheapo less than $100 Roland boxes. USB, S/PDIF, TOSLink, cheap converter boxes, etc. all sounded bad in Paul’s experience, so it led credibility to my claim of lowering jitter.
I can hear the way he said “using TOSLINK?!” Still
(Me, I like TOSLINK)
The boards are finally here:
