Ugh! My Ears Are Bleeding! How do you deal with it?

If I ever build and market an equaliser I shall name it (or the compamy) that!
“Sometimes a bit of Anathema is good for you” could be the tagline…

Exactly… Was he murdered or did he commit suicide! When it came to recording and adding/recording sound effects, etc. he was an innovator for his time

I deal with it with a Decware ZROCK2. I have three of them. I can no longer live without one, highly recommended with the huge caveat that the waiting list for one is very long, and used ones rarely come up or stay for sale for long.

Yes so it seems!
I like the description of his “heath robinson” studio at the flat though

Yes, who does he remind me of ?

Hopefully without the dangerous instability…

you mentioned a 3-letter swear word

Maybe listen to it on another source.
If the music moves me, I can enjoy it even coming from the speakers in my laptop. And I have no expectations of high fidelity in that case.

I’ve been getting into some of The Kinks’ weirder stuff off of Low Budget, and Everybody’s in Show-biz lately. Such a great band!

I’ve found that vinyl can sometimes tame some of what you’re describing. And I agree with Ron, if you love it enough there is alway a way to listen to it. Maybe a nice vintage Denon or Marantz integrated will help.

Seriously though, don’t be precious, you’ve already said it sounds terrible, get an equaliser, and bypass it when not listening to the offending tracks

…or if you are playing from a local music server / streamer setup, load those offending tracks into a PC, and EQ the file using Audacity or some such (and save as a copy with a different name and all that), and then no EQ need be in your playback chain and you get to choose which version you play, EQ’d or un-EQ’d, of the offending tracks.
I am sure there are those on here who could offer some basic suggestions as to the EQ, or just suck it and see.
May have a learning curve if you’ve not done that sorta shiz before, but the knowledge will stand you in good stead for ever after.

Some time ago I happened upon a 40th anniversary sampler collection by the Kinks on SACD. It’s not bad sounding. “Rock and Roll Fantasy” and “Living on a Thin Line” are pretty good, actually. (Image is from Discogs, not my copy, though it’s the same cover)

My CD of Come Dancing with the Kinks sounds pretty-darned good. A bit bright but nowhere near the “unlistenable” classification of the worst offenders in my library:

FWIW.

You guys are killing me! The early Kinks sound was very much intentionally “offensive.” That’s kinda what made them … The Kinks!

In addition to having “audiophile” equipment with no tone controls, I also have a Parasound P6 preamp that does have tone controls, and specifically purchased it because of the good, clean sound quality plus tone controls, for when it’s needed.
