Upcoming PMG signature amp

Thanks for the info. I kind of expected I’d need new stands, mine are 23" by 17". I have looked but not much available of that size.

I continue to wonder why the amp is so deep. It’s all but industry standard. Paul might explain one day.

The power consumption/usage and class A bias current isn’t that high, requiring those large radiators. There’s plenty of room inside and the class D modules could easily be placed e.g. above eachother. What am I missing?

Heat sinks and heat dissipation? That is my guess.
And it looks cool

Maybe it was just a cosmetic design decision to make the amps appear more macho.

Bigger = more better.

The heat sinks are necessary for sure. We don’t like adding metal just “because”. They are definitely needed to dissipate the heat.

That said, we have two choices: go up (taller) or out (longer). The BHK series went up and that was cool but we had a series of mixed opinions on the look of that. Had comments from people that it kind of looked like a microwave oven , :frowning:

Ewe thought long and hard about it and decided to go long. I very much like the look as, to me, it is more like a serious piece of stereo kit—which is exactly what it is.

This new amp design is going to put people back on their heels. Darren’t new topology is ground breaking and dare I say earth shattering. Of all the designs he’s managed (including the PMG preamplifier which everyone’s talking about), this new amp topology outshines everything. A real jaw dropper like no amount you’re ever heard.

But yeah, it’s a fricking beast.

I watched a video of yours awhile back where you described the topology of the amp. Can’t seem to find it now.

I don’t think the size of this amplifier is out of the ordinary for an an amplifier of it’s power rating, there are and have been many amplifiers with similar dimensions.

Did you happen to measure the M400 monoblocks? I was wondering about the dimensions of them as well. They look to be the same height and width but much less depth.

I saw all three of the new mid level amps, S200, S400, and M400 (mono) at AXPONA. They are all the same size and in what could be new casework (compared to BHK 250/300 case); obvious new faceplate to match other PMG components, similar heat sinks on the side, maybe a lower height, and a width and depth very close, maybe the same, as the BHK 250/300. It’s a little surprising there isn’t any detailed information on these on the website. They’re supposed to go on sale next month. I’m most interested in the standby/operating power draw, not likely to be much different than my BHK250, but the higher Class A rating has me curious …

I was told full specs, marketing info, and product pages on the PS Audio website later this week or next.

These do look very good to me, especially in sinister black. Clean modern lines. No steampunk.

I agree, the all black looks really good.

Even though all my other PSA components are silver, I think I’d go with the black PMG amp.

Looking inside this massive chassis I’m seeing a lot of air space. Where are the massive rows of capacitors seen in its predecessors? I understand the large heat sinks are required but seems like these new amps share nothing in common with the past and represent less is more in a bigger scope of things.

Question for the veterans. In today’s Paul’s post (Big is better), Paul is stating even at low volumes a more powerful amp sounds better due to more headroom. This makes sense but what if you have a FR12 or a pair of FR12’s. So now the subs are doing the heavy lifting say from 60hz down and your main amp is controlling the mids and treble. Would it still make a difference if you went with the PMG S200 vs S400 amp?

It depends if you roll off the main speakers, or you use the high level connection which Paul I think still recommends in which case there is no reduction of load on the amp,

I will be using the wireless transmitter.

In my experience lower powered amplifiers (for the last thirty years mine have been tube topology) sound better. I use speakers that don’t need a lot of power, and I love the sound that my 2 watt and 6 watt per channel amps provide the most.

My thought on that is adding subwoofers do not significantly change the argument. Whether passive subwoofers which are driven by their own amplifiers, or active subwoofers such as the F12, the speakers are still operating over their full range and will make nearly the same demand of the amplifier driving them. The F12s are just supplementing what the speaker is not able to do below 100 Hz or so. If the setup is such that the input to the subwoofer comes from the output of the main speaker’s amplifier the F12 still has its internal amplifier driving it so the actual current draw from the main speaker’s amplifier is very low.

The PMG amp manuals are up.

Depending on your view, the good/bad news is no user replaceable fuses. It’s a certain sense of relief.
