At 85 his playing tells a wonderful story, simple and poignant, elegant maybe is the right word. A pleasant hour, makes me want to go back to Buenos Aires.
I am gonna have to check it out. I admit to having shied away when I saw this on Qobuz because I don’t care much for pop music or Mr Jackson but your description merits a listen.
Ben Webster “Saturday Night at the Montmartre” Muzak Japan 2 cd set, disc 1
Great sound for this material.
This is an incredible album! Spinning the BN 80th Anniversary edition. Personally I would have preferred this in the Tone Poet packaging.
I’ve been collecting all the SFJazz Collective releases and I’ve grown to reallyl like the way they structure their tours and mix cover material with original work. It is quite a challenge to have a jazz ensemble tackle some of these works. When they are covering Miles or Chick or Wayne or Thelonious they have to bring something new and solid, and they do; when covering Jobim or Wonder or Jackson they have different challenges but they manage to surprise. These artists are great ambassadors for the modern jazz shapes and forms.
An interesting piece on Blue Note, Don Was and the 80th anniversary series of vinyl releases. Don admits issues with the 75th anniversary masters, being sourced from digital files and problems with the pating and pressings. Wayne Shorter’s Speak No Evil is worth seeking out. I understand a 80th anniversary release is due out January 15th. I have the Music Matters version which is exceptional.
