Why is the PMG so bland?

Hi everyone… Moring Paul  Starting out my audio experience for a second time to get back into hi fidelity. During my hunt I’ve had the pleasure of trying classe delta stereo, Micromega M100 integrated. Anthem integrated.. Moved from Martin Logan B100s and recently purchased Martin Logan F200s.. while I await my towers im using Revel Salon 2s

I’ve decided to try PS audio! For the past couple weeks the Revels have been feeding off the M700s mono class d. Controlling those is a PerfectWave mk1..

This has been a pleasurable experience as the Salon 2 is a hungry tower and the m700s dont flinch, at a volume of 80 on the dac pushing club volume pretty much, clarity and integrity hasn’t been compromised.

Im probably going to upgrade to a BHK250 in the coming weeks as it looks serious and elegant but professional look… Imexcited to hear the reference details as i appreciate the asthetics.

The question really at his point is id like to eventually upgrade to the pmg dac… but when I look at the cool esthetics and materials used on the BHK line, the pro grade chassis look with a clean piano top finish… why is the pmg so bland… looks like a m700 with a fancy plate.

I get that the build inside is gorgeous and sounds like endgame… but the looks is a let down. Mcintosh has a glass plate and great materials, accuphase is solid with that too. PS audio is stepping into mcintosh upper brand money.

Would be cool if review of the esthetics was reevaluated. Being proud of this company isn’t too hard. I take pride in showing off my gear to friends and family. Its a great feeling when people go “ WOW “ an then the sound follows the esthetic expectations and delivers…

At the moment I looked at the pmg line and it didnt wow me.. ill probably buy the dac but I won’t look at it like yea 12K gone or with a heart palp of design gasp when I open my door everytime.

Why not a billet enclosure like micromega and ps audio engraved or a Paul MG signature engraved.. i see many company’s put there name on the cards inside… why botherifyou can’t see it.All that engineering hidden. So why not a glass top to look inside to appreciate the work and science?

Thanks for reading, all opinions welcome. Please take this post not as an insult, but as one man’s review and excitement wanting only the best for himself and a company id like to spend a longhaul endgame with…

thanks to support an paul

regards, SPOOKY

Interesting. My reaction to the PMG aesthetic is quite opposite. No, it won’t end up in the Museum of Modern Art, but it still looks nice. I found the glossy black top of old less attractive and was always on alert that I might scratch it.
Like with the Aspen speaker series, the PMG line look was created by a well-regarded outside design service. I see this minimalist approach with a touch of curvy flair appealing, and it seems to be showing up more and more on other high-end lines. It’s not cheap to mill thick solid aluminum to this shape, but that’s what it takes. Maybe some of this expense should have been routed to painting the bottom plate (hides).
Anyway, to each his own, and, I like what I own.

I respect your appreciation for the new line, I’ve seen so much ability to creation and imagination to products lately that I just was hoping for a unified looking unit. Like the King line up.

Assuming you own one, how do you like the sound and details of it? Im gonna be in the market for one, ill pair it with a bhk250 and should be a great sound combo..

Thanks for your response

Hi Spooky and thanks for joining in and congrats on your return to HiFidelity!

Perhaps it’s the photos? In person I think you’d be wowed by the PMG’s looks and stature. It stands proud when viewed on a shelf and certainly next to the older PerfectWave.

That said, in design aesthetics there’s absolutely no way any designer can hit the visual mark with every single person. We’re too differing in our opinions. And, that’s just fine and the way it should be.

I do hope you get a chance to audition, pet, feel, a PMG Signature DAC. I think you might be swayed…

I own the PMG Pre. The PMG 512 is on order. The preamp is nice. You can see other owner

Thanks Paul, yea all I’ve seen is pictures in all fairness.. ill check one out in person when it gets on the shelf of my dealer, true you can’t please everyone I get that. Design always comes with haters, im pretty open minded but I definitely only got pictures to go on.

Great choice in music for testing and creating the M700/M1200 amps on the infinities btw.

Hans Zimmer and Dire Straits, I ran your list on the Salon 2s an M700s to graspe depth and body… Miles Davis is fantastic. Was a great foundation to audit audio coming back into all this.

Thanks for the reply and ill check out the PMG soon as possible.

Take care..

Regards SPOOKY!

Could be worse. You could also have to satisfy people regarding the packaging. Consider:

Be glad you have only a small company.

(Background: This video escaped Microsoft. It was produced internally to demonstrate what they have to go through. No indication whether this was to say it was a good idea or a bad idea.)

I haven’t read any of this thread. I’m only responding to the OP’s question: Having seen the entire PMG line at Axpona, I love the design. You see bland, I see elegant. We’re all different.

I stood next to RonP at Axpona as he gazed at the PMG gear. Normally, if he likes something I don’t like it. But on this we both agree, the PMG gear looks great!

*but we didn’t see the bottom plate.

I remember you making your “I need to buy this” noises.

Part of me wants to know what that sounds like. Most of me does not.

Sorry if I’ve offended anyone with my post, I went off of the pictures.. i judged a book by its cover.

Having read some other threads on the unit and Paul explaining the 1inch an a half faceplate and the careful workmanship gone into it im getting a pallet for it. Honestly ill probably end up purchasing one next spring instead of a mk2.

So again to all those iv scratched the wrong way my apologies :upside_down_face:

Yall have a good evening!
