Windom: Sound Impressions

Does it arm photon torpedoes as well? ; )

I guess it’s not that sophisticated
It’s generally just a quick apply option of what the other options also do (maybe has a little less effect than playing the PAD disk for an hour etc.).
I just always forget about that degaussing thing…which I should not.

Most audiophiles should employ an exorcist periodically. -Good for the soul, no?

At least those participating in the Magico thread should not only treat their stereo

Yup. Use regularly. PAD I use at least once/week. Usually as a warm
Up disc for tubes before serious listening.

So that’s why our lights just flickered here, :smirk:

I’m using Windom on my DirectStream on a Shindo tube system with Shindo speakers, which might provide a bit more warmth than a SS system, I am pretty much blown away by the sound. Just effortless detail but still quite smooth. My system has oodles of midrange, so I may not be bugged by the high level of detail. Any harshness I hear, sounds like it’s with recording quality. I jumped from Huron to this, so it’s pretty revelatory. Thanks Ted and Paul!

Last night I finally decided to load Windom on DSD this is a significant upgrade to Snow mass when it comes to linearity clarity the highs are very clear & I seem to have lost bass my speakers are the Daedalus Poseidon I normally stream Quboz this Windom reminds of RCA wind-up disc gramophone" His master Voice" cylinder phonograph without the distortion of the sound of the needle clicking just too much brightness for me ! my load is good

You really have to remove the USB card then power cycle it. I found once again last night I must reload Windom after playing it about four weeks or it gets kind of sharp and loses fullness. Knowing that now, I know when things change. Some say it is not possible but it tends to drift. I accept it now to be normal maintenance kind of like changing an air filter that starts to whistle from constriction or a full vacuum bag and the vacuum goes higher pitched. Lol strange but now my fourth time encountering this phenomenon.

I forget - did you sort out if a degaussing disc/track does anything for this condition? Curious, as it sounds like it could be static buildup or some such. Spitballing here.

I don’t have a degaussing track to try. I noticed it had drifted while I had guests over listening. They all noticed since i asked them to listen to a song. We reloaded firmware, repowered once. It goes-to a hyperdetailed sound when I think it has degraded. Then magic return After a reload . been roughly 28 days. Maybe it is moon cycle sort of like the time of the month thing. Four months with Windom four times now.

A fascinating idea I, too, wonder if degaussing would resolve this impression as reloading the firmware similarly ā€œresetsā€ the transformer.

Is there a degaussing menu in the DSD?

I’ve notice a similar phenomenon - though honestly it could be the vagaries of power conditions (amps are direct to mains w/o conditioning), music selection, saturation of step-up transformers in the 'stat speakers, or simply my mental state. Forgot about that transformer in the DSD output. But what’s another variable in this sport?

But I do use the frequency sweep track on the Ayre ā€œIrrational But Efficaciousā€ disk and it seems to help. I’ve also found that playing a continuous pink noise signal (repeated track on the Ayre disc) for several hours has a similar, and welcome, effect.

I discovered this when breaking in new cables. I’d copied the pink noise track to a usb thumb drive and played it via the DMP usb slot on my DMP/DSD combo. I’m sort of convinced that if I run this for an hour before a listening session while I let the amps warm up, things sound smoother.

Satchel of gris-gris, application of mojo hand and and burning candles optional.

I’ll run pimkbnoise through it next time. But a hour of that anything would be better. Software reload way Quicker and not torture to auditory canals.

A degaussing menu option would be da bomb.

For what it’s worth. I felt it was a bitt bass heavy after reload but smoother and less sharp immediately . But is perfect balance today.

My rig is in a dedicated room in the basement, so I set the volume low on the speakers, close the door and depart until it’s time to listen.

I have run a disk with pink noise on OPPO 205 connected to DSD via Neotech silver cable by tempo electric with WBT silver connectors also did run a test disk with all frequencies sweep , which seems to have helped a bit or could just be psychological ? ( brain can trick you into thinking anything ) I will use this for the next 4 to 5 weeks or switch back to snowmass but I hope Ted does come out with a software patch to fix this
