Your Next Upgrade? (Part 2)

Is the transformer buzz definitely gone or is it still there (sometimes more sometimes less audible)?

So far I haven’t had any loud humming noises intermittently. Even in normal operation, the transformer hum seems to be quiet when I put my ear to the amplifier. I hope it stays that way. So far I’m happy. Not only is the humming quieter, but the sound also benefits from the IsoTek V5 SYNCRO UNI 16. I couldn’t find any disadvantages compared to the Furutech socket I used previously.

My latest upgrade…

From Pine Tree Audio per forum member JLawry. I also ordered some power cables from them today. Unfortunately they don’t make HDMI cables so I ordered one from Audio quest that should arrive tomorrow.
Initial impression is more clarity and softer highs. The highs always had a hard edge and that is now gone. Last sunday I decided to unwind my power cables. I had them wound due to length and was starting to wonder if this was impacting the sound. I also moved the power cable that was on the amp to the power supply for the Matrix. I had the curtesy cable that came with the Gain Cell DAC on that power supply. I moved that curtesy cable to the sub and put a power cable for a PC (Only one I had left) on the amp. The sound was always a bit veiled and after unwinding the power cables and swapping them that veil was gone. Very happy with the improvements!

Hi Andreas,

This sounds good and hopeful.
The grid is becoming more and more polluted.
Please let us hear if you hear any improvement during the break in period?
I understand you have heard only pluses so far.

I am so nervous about putting it in place, it’s kinda spendy. Instead of a detachable headshell the arm itself detaches from the major portion of the tonearm… I can then lay it upside down on a table and carefully do the swap. The tonearm comes with a special device that allows a normal fool, or even a huge fool like me to get it positioned properly. I installed the Platinum I use now.
But first I have to disconnect and pull the phono preamp out. Then remove the left and right covers (as it is dual mono) and adjust the load and whatnot.
I may wait a day or two. But probably not. I could easily just put a record on and enjoy it as it stands. But nah.

I would go without caffeine for a couple days, get good sleep, a brisk walk, a good meal, absolute silence, two pairs of glasses and then call Mike Trei to do the installation.

Instead of eating six gummies, I may just do five.

…or Brian Walsh, my local install guy. He’d drive up to do it.

But they should be ringing at Al’s door!

When I got my phono preamp it was set to 80 ohms load. I knew that was wrong but it sounded fine so I never messed with it. Today I messed with it and set both channels at 300. Now I need to play some vinyl with the old cartridge to see what results my lazyness may have brought. @minnesotafats is on his way over. This could be interesting.

I was more afraid of unplugging and removing the phono preamp. It took nearly a full minute. The Cartridge change is next after I listen to a couple sides of vinyl.

UPDATE: I didn’t hear much, if any difference after changing the load. I feel justified in being lazy.
