Your Next Upgrade? (Part 2)

I’d come by and help if I live closer and knew anything about phono cartridges. I know 315 miles is about as close as you want me to that diamond cartridge.

Received disc flattener today; full metal construction and built like tank; utilitarian / industrial design with attention to the details. Powers up with US voltage and control is easy to use. Will find time to test it out (I got a few warped ones).

Cool. Or, rather, hot!

I think it was a Shunyata. Isn’t that the brand that has medical grade technology?

If anything I’d expect the top end to open up a bit at 300 ohms.

I would have guessed that myself. Instead it seemed a bit fuller and a tad darker. But I was guessing. It may have been no different.

Belefonte Sings The Blues was what we listened to. The sound stage was 247° and the reverb was really pronounced.

I picked that up at a record store hoping the Kirmuss would bring it back to its original glory. Sad to say not so much.

I bought my new copy standing next to you last year at AXPONA. It is an absolute must have.

I am on my fifth album with the old cartridge and the new settings. I definitely believe I do hear an upgrade since boosting the load from 80 ohms to 300. There is a lot more there, there. It’s one louder.

Since you made me buy the canadian destatic device vinyl is noise free. That is easily one of my all time favorite purchases.

try 400 ohms.

Fully agree! Does a great job neutralizing static and can serve as a curling stone in a pinch.

Also good for removing static from cables, curtains, sweaters, hair, etc.

As long as it’s open try 800 ohms and see if it’s air opens without zingy/crispy.

I made a few slight adjustments to my system:

  1. moved the listening couch approx 8" closer to the speakers
  2. moved the speakers 2" closer to the listening couch
  3. moved the speakers about 3" closer together
  4. adjusted toe-in because of the plan dimensional changes
The end result is more openness with the midrange and treble.
With these new adjustments, I then decided to test again just how much of a difference the newer Front Row Reserve interconnect makes (the 1 pair between DAC & pre), so I put the AQ MacKenzie back in the system. The older (and lesser) AQ MacKenzie sounded good, actually quite good with the new adjustments. Then I put the FRR back in and wow!!! FRR is much nicer. Much cleaner and much more open versus AQ MacKenzie.

No mystery there.

Couldn’t you move the couch 10” closer and left the speakers alone or vice versa? lol

That’s a good question, but because of the rather large toe-in angle, moving the speakers forward also brings the speakers closer together, though I intentionally moved them closer together also.
