Your Next Upgrade? (Part 2)

Took advantage of the trade in deal to upgrade from the BHK 250 to 300 Monoblocks. Should be here Wednesday! :grinning:

I got a pair of Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds today. They are remarkably good. I had a pair of XM4 prior, while they were good, these are far better.

They are lighter, smaller, better fit, sound richer, and have better noise cancelling.

I haven’t directly compared them to my Noble Fokus, but if my audio memory is working, the M5’s are close. Definitely an upgrade.

MX4 on the left, MX5 on the right:

The case is smaller as well:

They didn’t replace Pass. I originally went there several months ago to see the Pass Mono’s I was considering from TMR. They said the problem with pass labs is availability and how long it takes to get orders for customers. He said they had several customers buy the floor models because the wait was so long for new product so they have no Pass Labs on display.

According to Mick, that was the reason they decided to stop carrying Pass.
I ended up going through Mark at Renohifi.

Thanks for the clarification regarding Pass Labs availability at Quintessence.
When I spoke with them via phone regarding availability I detected a certain frustration with their ability to obtain product. In contrast Reno HiFi seems too have better luck, which I find somewhat odd, as Mark is retiring and shuttering Reno HiFi.

And if you read the “news” page from Renohifi, they say their stock is running out and will not be ordering more

Have not checked recently, I got in under the wire…

RenoHifi Clearance sale kicks in August 1, limited to stock on hand.

My main dealer has been with Brinkman for decades. I’ve been to a couple of demos and in a world of free money it would be my choice. Their chief engineer is a real character and sells the product very well. All their products are upgradeable. Used sales are almost unheard of because of non-redundancy. This seems to be a dealer demo unit, which is just about the only way used items get to market.

As a Lumin owner, I’d love to know how a power cable can have a frequency-dependent impact on a device that is purely digital in/out and has a substantial internal linear power supply so the converted DC is highly regulated.

Too bad no one is carrying on with Reno Hifi.
Based on Mark’s high level of customer service and product availability, trades, etc, I think this is going to impact Pass’ sales significantly.
Reno is a dedicated Pass Labs business. Pass’ other dealers sell multiple lines and will promote what they can push out the door that day—which they can’t be faulted for doing.

Lumin U2 is sensitive to power cord change as it turned out. I also found power cords with silver conductor seem to suit streaming devices better. A warmness/darkness SQ associated with streaming has bothered me since beginning in my system, and silver PCs such as PSR-14 (and CCMO3) reduce it significantly, from my experience.

A power cable or fuse for my LPS on my Melco S100 switch for the ethernet in front of my streamer will also have the same sonic impact as elsewhere in my system.

Hello Donald. Have you already installed the PSR 11?

Yes! I did last night and it has a puissant effect. But I need to hear it again this afternoon. Golfing first🏌🏼

Copper and silver are both very good conductors and their resistance and conductance are only a few percentage points different. For AC, their skin depth is also near identical and largely irrelevant for the diameter of 50Hz or 60Hz power cables. I can understand using Litz cables for high frequency signals where the frequency becomes relevant for skin effect, but not power cables.

You asked my thoughts and I gave it.

I can understand your apparent irritation Donald.

That said, the “why” part of the question is interesting to me as well.

I don’t doubt your personal experiences and opinion, but I would like to understand the cause and effect in this instance better.

Hopefully, others will chime in.

Cheers.

As far as I know, copper and silver differ in their penetration depth properties. It’s not just the material silver or copper. Properties such as the number and arrangement of the crystals, purity, processing, etc. also make a decisive difference. The dielectric also has an influence on the result. Just like the structure of the cable. A high quality copper wire can sound better than a plain silver wire. Don’t ask where I read that or which of these have pros and cons. When it comes to audio, theory and practice often diverge. It is best to try it out for yourself in your own system and decide based on the result you hear.

Maybe this page is interesting
