Your Next Upgrade? (Part 2)

A position due to laziness. Luca did the heavy lifting and I followed his advice. Some day…

I actually did nothing with the tuning ring, at least I hope I didn’t move it, so can’t take any credit for how it is set.

I am wondering if I actually heard some difference, or am I imagining I heard a difference. I was hoping you can tell me.

I believe so far Luca is the only one heard a difference (not sure which Stealth cord), but if you have a few there’re just too many combinations :person_shrugging:t2:

Any new revelations?

I sat in a room with Serguei, the creator of Stealth Cables and an assistant as they went thru the tuning process for five cables. A prominent Audio reviewer who has a lot of experience with tuning Stealth cables announced when the correct setting was found. You could of fooled me. If there is a difference, I could not detect it. Hence I don’t pay much attention to the tuning.

But Serguei has said many times, it is better to have a cable without a tuner than to have one with a tuner, which is in the wrong place.

Carry on as you wish.

My system is cleaner sounding than it has ever been. Vocals are clean, violins are well defined, cymbals clear, upper bass tamed. There is no “muffled” sound to my system that it has without the extremely nice power cables

I am going to have to put bad interconnect cables in my system for a few days so I can then be happy with my system again after I put the better interconnect back in the system.

Two things need to happen first before I will do any more ring adjustment:

After D333 arrives
After D2020 completely breaks in

The ring is currently 8" from the PZ wall, which was the same as two days before when I first tried it. Things might change since the sound seems to need a bit more focus today. It could be a part of the break-in process.

I confirm once again, my italian ears can detect sound differences from the tuning rings - not in balance or timber or coloration. Just focusing the image in some way. If you try different positions try to listen to voices in particular, it’s easier to perceive the result.

Generally speaking I found my personal sweet spot with the ring on the component end, a few inches from the IEC inlet.

All my cables are 1,2 and 1,5 meters long, as per Serguei longer cords may require the ring more in the center of the cable.

Soooo, can you get them without the ring?
I played with the tuning ring on my V18 two times; with and without gummies. I concluded that Serguei must have an impish sense of humor.

Yes - they can be purchased without rings. I ordered an Octava SPDIF cable without the ring. I received an email from Stealth offering to send me one immediately, with the rings, for about $100 more than the non-ring version which would have to be built from scratch. I took them up on the offer more for the quicker shipping schedule than any anticipated benefit from the ring.

Put a MainStream in the PowerZone and a SnubWay in the same wall socket feeding the PZ (dedicated circuit). Sounds nice.

While I was at it I moved the 20-20 ring feeding the PZ about 2 feet further away from the PZ since my 20-20 is 2.5m. I think the bulk of the improvement I’m hearing is from the MainStream/Snubway not from moving the ring. I could confirm by moving the ring back but I think I will procrastinate on that - moving the ring is a little more difficult than it sounds on my system since I’m using every inch of the 2.5 meters and pulling it out of the PZ happens pretty easily.

Another plus for the Snubway - it helps support the 20-20 plug:

Makes for a cleaner look. Can’t put the Snubway on top, won’t fit.

Now that the FRR & Stealth power cables are gone, this was definitely the best my system has sounded. I liked how my system sounded when the FRR power cable arrived on Monday and powering the MU2. Was a big step up from my current system. Then liked how music sounded on Tuesday when both Stealth and FRR were in the system. Then also like my system on Wednesday with 3 Stealth power cables in my system.

But my favorite setup/combination was with the MU2 as the preamp, to the Infinity box, which then fed a CJ tube amp. The CG LE powered the MU2, and the Dream 20-20 fed the PZ. The CJ amp has an internally wired power cable, so could not be replaced. Maybe this combination will be reserved for special occasions to eliminate having to continually replace power tubes.

Just purchased a modified DS Sr. from a fellow forum member. Looking forward to comparing it to my current modified DS Sr.

Modifications on the purchased DAC include:

  1. APS Beeswax transformers (mine has EDCOR transformers installed)

  2. External analogue power supply board (assuming this is the same as the one installed in my current DAC)

  3. “VOCM Modifictions” (OPAMP capacitor upgrades/lowering of impedance for this subsystem?)

Should be an interesting comparison…

If nothing else, this purchase will free up my unmodified DS Sr. (office system) for trade or sale on something else I desperately “need”.

If anyone has some more detail about what the VOCM modifications from @JKRichards involves, please chime in.

Reading your first paragraph, you mean you bought a modified DS Sr. to replace your original DS Sr., right? Or do you have two modified DS Sr. ?

Donald:

I will soon be the proud (foolish?) owner of two modified DS Sr. DACs (and a third, unmodified DS Sr. DAC).

Three DS Sr. Hmm, very interesting, but I am not judging. Stranger things in the forum have happened.

You don’t say!

Ahhh, but what cable is connected to them? And what power cable is powering them?

It’s complicated.
