When I interview my next dog, audio test will be a part of audition. But I like big dogs and my wife likes little ones, so we have not had one for the past 30 years.
We ended up having tropical fish for 10 years, and they didn’t care what type of music was on.
My “I can’t hear it but I sense it” story relates to the rear firing tweeter on the FR30. You can tell if it is off, or on. It doesn’t, and shouldn’t, extend high frequencies, but adds a sense of air and space to things. This is reminiscent of other dipole speakers I’ve owned. I like it.
My next upgrade is going to be the My Sonic Lab Signature Diamond. @aangen’s endorsement of this cartridge fortified my decision. My brother and friend’s My Sonic Lab Signature Platinum version also impressed me, but I might as well get the top model. It will replace my SoundSmith Hyperion MK II. I will do a comparision when the MSL Signature Diamond arrives.
As for my search of my Dac upgrade, I’ve put it off for now. I just haven’t heard a Dac that makes me want to put a mortgage on my house to get it yet. If I just want to listen to the music, any Dac will do, but to get the best sound possible I will stay with vinyl for now.
A good friend replaced his very old ClearAudio Goldfinger with the Diamond.
His comment was that it’s really really good. Maybe his needs to settle in for the third really.
A friend was over Monday night. When I lowered the stylus to the record my friend said there was something wrong, there was no sound. As the sound gently built he was stunned at the complete lack of groove noise. That is one of the Diamond strong suits. Silence where silence should be. And it tracks effortlessly.
I lived with the Signature Platinum for many years. I never, ever thought I was missing anything. The Diamond clearly shows me what I was missing. Oh my!
Speaking of My Sonic Lab Signature Diamond cartridges, tonight I discovered mine got damaged the other night. Bent the cantilever. Hopefully it can be repaired at the factory. Otherwise I get to buy it again. It is crucial to me.
Oh sorry to hear that. I’m sure the factory will do it.
I’ve had my EMT/Linn repaired by an aftermarket shop and it sounded good. But then I sent it back to the factory in Switzerland and the original glory was truly back.
