Yikes. Not sure if I’m supposed to like this post.
It wasn’t me.
Cantilever bent, tip gone. I am so sad.
I did this once with a much less exotic cartridge.
I still have no idea what I did.
Too bad that you can only listen to MU2 or Ethos for now.
Working in a Hi-Fi store for years, a bent stylus happened a few times. It happened once with a Koetsu Rosewood cartridge, which sold for the unheard of sum of $1,000. in the early eighties.
No one confessed to those crimes (it wasn’t me)
but stuff happens even when every precaution is made.
Even under the watchful eye of home listening, that thin little needle can fall pray to damage.
Add alcohol, age and maybe some other stimulants, and any “oops” can happen.
Sorry for your lose, Al.
I’ve been there a few times. It’s a horrible feeling. Sorry, buddy.
Gotta throw one of your back-up carts on…
Best,
JP
Sorry to hear about this.
That is terrible news Al, sorry to hear it. SoundSmith replace broken tips for $850. Hopefully MSL has a similar deal.
Speaking about broken, my audiophile friend just bought a brand new Basis ASR Exclusive 2X MKII battery powered phono preamp to replace his aging Basis ASR Exclusive phono preamp. He was so happy that straight out of the box, it completely surprised him how much better it is than his old unit. 10 minute into playing his favorite music, the right channel had a loud pop and went silent. The designer told him it could be the CT or X-ray may be responsible for damaging the IC in the unit. Basis is built in Germany. Sounds like BS to me. But anyway, the dealer which is located in Southern Ca. told him he has a brand new unit that he just open for demo. If he doesn’t want to return the unit which he has to pay for in pallets to Germany to have it fixed, he can come the southern Ca. dealer and have the defective unit exchanged. My friend decided to drive from northern Ca. to southern Ca., a 6 hour drive to exchange the unit. That’s a 12 hour drive there and back. Today, right now he’s already on his way to Southern Ca.
That’s terrible news Al. I hope the OEM can make you whole.
Did your bunny have anything to do with this?
Just looked up MSL carts. Looks like I can afford their $250 headshell. Yay!!!
I have rearranged my rack to prepare for the new guests. The bottom right is where LHY SW-10 Pro is. It arrived 30 minutes ago. I just turned it on so I will not give any SQ impression yet. I do not need Puritan PSM156 anymore. All components including the satellite can be plugged into PZ.
Two M1200s are on the left side, and they will be replaced by Gryphon D333 whenever it shows up.
I already know Luca will not approve of the “non symmetric look”. It does look like left side heavy, but one improvement at a time.
The sad news is that I need a longer speaker cable (2.5 M); Fidelium is barely reaching the amp (on the right laying under the maple platform). Stealth is out of reach because their crazy pricing. How crazy? Using Royal 17 as an example:
The 1.5M is listed at $29.5k, and 2M is $1k more at $30.5k. But 2.5M is $12.5k more at $42k. The next down V18-T has the larger increase too from 2M to 2.5M. Go figure!
SNA Takshaka has the standard at 3M, and at a much more reasonable price. Like Stealth, they make bi-wire, and it is a solid design too (read their bi-wire design on website). It has more gold content that is described to bring more warmth, fuller and musical presentation. But I am waiting for Pro’s review on it.
As I typed the sound is already very nice after 20 minutes of playing!
Quoting Stealth list prices is deception, but humorous.
well then, glad I live several states away
Since you are not interested in switches, I figured mentioning Stealth will get your attention.
I don’t hear switches. I never have. I feel fortunate.
It’s a switch.
Update;
My friend made the exchange and is on his way back. The unit was defective.
At the dealer, he got a chance to listen to a $1.3 million system. He commented it sounded pretty good for digital. Rockport Lyra speakers, CH Precision electronics, Wadax digital, and a smaller system with the Rockport Atria II and ASR integrated amp which someone else was listening to. The guy bought the ASR integrated amp on the spot. Must be pretty good.
Congrats for the new set up, take your time, don’t worry (but tell me that you will find a symmetrical solution in the future!)
