I use non locking bananas on mine. I prefer spades but the bananas work best on the stellar binding post IMO.
Harbeth 40.2/40.3 would be pretty amazing with the M1200s.
Magnepan 20.7.
Just some ideas
The 1200 certainly sounds amazing with the Harbeth C7 and SHL5 s
The M1200’s sound great with the Martin Logan CLX’s also!
They sound fkkn awesome with B&W 804d3s accompanied by a 4-pack of REL S/812’s tuned on the more modest side…and an EXCEPTIONAL 130 year old room (good before treatments…but proper treatments per sound lever meter and balloons being popped).
Stunning as always! Bet is sounds darn good!
Excellent job Darren! I think it would be hard to find a speaker that doesn’t sound better with M1200’s connected to them!
Thanks Paul!
Any further comments regarding the M1200?
The M1200’s are fantastic! Compared to the M700’s I hear so much more information on music tracks that I didn’t notice or were not as noticeable with the M700’s. The detail and accuracy is amazing. Voices sound more realistic and natural. Sometimes at least for me its hard to describe but I guess I would call it a more visceral experience, on the great recordings you can physically hear piano keys being struck, guitar strings being plucked, they definitely create a much more real experience then the M700’s can! Live recordings you feel and hear the ambiance of the room of the recordings, the subtle coughs and the not so subtle coughs, drink glasses clanking. Not that anyone wants to hear all that but it adds to the experience of a live recording in my opinion. In some well recorded classical pieces you can hear valves in the wind instruments in between notes you can even detect the breath of the musicians (yes honestly I’m not exaggerating). Between the M1200’s, THE BHK Preamp, and my speakers nothing is left to the imagination. Unfortunately it also can reveal the bad in poor recordings. I try to avoid bad recordings as should we all!
If you are on the fence about upgrading your M700’s to the M1200’s I can say you will have zero regrets! I purchased mine from the Music Room and got a fantastic price! If I had to pay full price for a pair knowing what I know now I would definitely do it they are worth the extra cost! I was considering the BHK 300’s (when I could afford them) and watched many videos and reviews with owners saying they are keepers and even Paul McGowan himself saying he could easlily live with the M1200’s in his system without having the urge to replace them. I can’t confirm or even insinuate that these amps sound better than the BHK 300’s but I can speculate they are very close! Once I saw the announcement of the upcoming BHK 600 my lust for the BHK 300 somewhat diminished. I’m not sure if the BHK 300’s can match the unlimited range and endless headroom the M1200’s provide but I could be wrong. I would love to compare the two and maybe someday I will! Until then I will thoroughly enjoy these M1200’s amplifiers as they provide endless entertainment and sonic bliss providing much satisfaction to my music enjoying soul!
I hope this helps some trying to take the leap! If someone wants to loan me a pair of BHK 300’s so I can compare I’d be more than happy to oblige! Take care and enjoy the music!
You’re going to cost me some $$$.
Thanks for the very thorough description.
If you get a pair it will cost you more time than money because you won’t want to leave the system once properly broken in! Good luck! I look forward to reading your review!
The M1200 is VERY tempting, and at the same time, the M700 (with the BHK Pre) is absolutely wonderful. Music is clean, open, natural, instruments sound real, female vocals bloom, great dynamics…
I loved the M700! The M1200 is like a M700 on steroids with smoother sound, much more realistic vocals, instruments take on a higher level of accuracy and detail! With the BHK preamp I think you will be amazed of the improvement. Give it the 30 day trial I don’t think you will send them back! They are that good!
The funny thing is, whenever M700’s show up on “the music room”, they get snatched up FAST
Just for yuks, a couple of days ago I looked there for M1200s and they had one. Not one pair, just one.
Hi Craig, They had three when I bought mine they being the Music Room. So yes last I checked the one m1200 is still available! It would make an amazing center channel! I’ve been tempted!
Yes they do! They are one of the best bargains in HIFI! My M1200’s sat quite a while on the TMR website. I was saving for BHK 300’s but I said what the hell? The funds are there if I don’t like the M1200’s I’ll sell them or trade them in. In my honest opinion I don’t know if I can let them go unless I find a ridiculous low price on BHK’s or someone offers a m1200 + cash trade. The M1200’s were originally listed at $5200 or $5400. I think they dropped the price several times as they sat there for 2.5 months. I got them for around $2700 with my M700’s that I traded in towards them. I feel I got a great deal on the M1200s! Thanks to Nick Lucini at the Music Room for getting me a great deal!
Greetings gang. I promised a review on here about four months ago. I apologize for taking so long, and honestly, I didn’t want to have the last word, but as you know, I was beat to the punch by several other writers. That’s probably a good thing because both Stereophile and TAS did an excellent job and their articles give my quirky style some helpful context.
I’m going to give a link to it right here -PS Audio Stellar M1200 Power Amplifier - Positive Feedback Moderators…is it kosher to do this?
It probably won’t tell you much more than you already know from my comments here. But hey, it was fun to write and hopefully, it will be fun to read.
Best Regards,
Stu
