Any Zu fans out there? Interested in other models/experiences

I sold my mains but needed something while I ruminate over next move. A couple DW6 Supremes in hickory popped up for a very reasonable price so I grabbed em. Holy smokes folks, these are not bad at all and do a lot of things well. When you consider price + made in USA, I’m impressed.
Just wondering if anyone out there has experience with DWs but also with models up the line- Druid, Omen Def, Soul etc. Looks like they have a 26k Definition 6 as well. Thanks…..

I started with the original Dirty Weekends and I loved them. Sold them to a friend and bought the Soul Supremes which are on “long term loan” to my nephew. They are fabulous for all types of music, even though Sean wants to market them as “rock” speakers. My nephew listens to a lot of classical music and again, they’re wonderful.
Their cables are also excellent and inexpensive.
A great company that makes very high quality products right here in the USA.

Thank you for that input. So Soul, Omen Def and Druid pretty much just bring more to the party in terms of performance and detail? Essentially, if I like DW6, I’ll like those as they are similar DNA I’m assuming.

I’m powering them with Aesthetix, so I’m thinking I got compatible upstream and none of them really need much power. However a bit of overhead never hurts I’ve found.

No real dealer network so input like this helps a lot. Heck, shops in general are pretty slim these days…

I have a pair of DW6 Superflys in hickory that I’ve really come to appreciate — they’re excellent rockers with a lively, engaging presentation. I’m considering taking them a step further by either installing Zu’s Jupiter Copper Foil & Wax capacitor upgrade or going with the GR Research DW6 crossover upgrade to add a bit more refinement and nuance. With either path, I feel they have the potential to move comfortably into the role of a primary speaker in my system.

I have a pair of Dirty Weekend II’s with upgraded clarity caps for my living room. Sometimes I have a hard time catching dialog on TV, so I got the bright idea to get a speaker with a little extra juice in the vocal range. It’s working great for me but I’ve also like to play music and concerts on Youtube and they work better for music than I was expecting. They don’t have a flat frequency response, but maybe that is not such a bad thing. They do sound better than I was expecting for their price.

Another thing that is really cool about them is how efficient they are. I built myself a little single ended triode tube amp that only makes 6 watts, but that is plenty for the Zu’s. If you are at all into tube amps, especially lower powered SET amps, they are certainly one of your better options.

Lastly, I was blown away with their finish in person. I have rustic hickory and love the look and quality finish. My wife has said multiple times that they seem more like “furniture grade” than “speaker grade.” I think what she really means is that she likes the well done real wood veneer and machined metal as opposed to most speakers cheap cabinets. Having said that, the DW at least looks nicer than it is. There is not much in the way of bracing inside the cabinet and the cabinet itself is cheap and relatively light, but well finished. I think Zu is even strait forward that they are made in a “dirty weekend”. The cabinet will resonate. I imagine the nicer models have more bracing and are better built, but I don’t actually know. The DW’s were limited run and really done to generate interest in the company overall with the hope of moving buyers up their line over time. Honestly, I think they end up representing tremendous value because of this, but I don’t know if the higher models would as well. My wife has grown attached and has resisted every time I have tried to change them out. I think I might end up needing to replace the Zu DWIIs with nicer Zu’s. Unfortunately, the Soul or the Druid which I’m more interested are cost more than I have been able to justify spending for my living room system. The Soul with their mid century modern design would look great though.

The cap upgrade is worthwile.
I would be careful of the GR Research mods. I have a friend who installed the GR mods on his Magnapan 1.7s. The result was nearly ruler flat output but the sound was fatiguing and horrible. He sold them and bought another stock pair. Sean Casey knows what he’s doing.

I have the DW6 in hickory and they seem very well made and look great. I got the Supreme level as the only “mods" I’m comfortable with are the ones done at Zu. The upgrades involved at the Supreme level all seem significant/worthwhile. I’m sure I’m hearing them although I don’t have any comparison. Especially when it comes to dw6 vs Druid, Soul etc.

Thank you for the input.

Good Day,

I order a pair of Ruby red Union, and listen for 6 month and sold them for cheap, 1/3 of purchasing price…"!

In fact, it was my Bryston, that was the problem, but I did’t know that.

Those speaker are very revealing, so bad recording show and bad integrated sound bright an unlistenable!

I wish, I new, 3 pair of speakers before I realise the amp, was the problem!

Very good speaker, very reveling, but need good gear with them because they will show what’s wrong with your HiFi or poor record!

Thank you for the input. That is unfortunate regarding the pairing of the amp and speakers.

I was exploring pointsource type speakers prior to mine becoming available. I was actually looking at Fyne.

I knew these type speakers were not known for being subtle but I have a integrated that incorporates a tube preamp section.

I would imagine if you had a bright system already, these speakers may not be your best choice.

These match my electronics well. And if they didn’t, I could always switch tubes.

Ordered the Jupiter Copper Foil & Wax capacitor upgrade from Zu this morning. Very simple install according to the video they have, will see what impact it has.

Fyne, is the old engineer team of Tannoy, that have started there company, they have new idea to improve tannoy speaker, but they weren’t allowed, so they move to build there own company!

After, if I remember well, been purchased by a china company, that bought tannoy for brevet and promisses to reopen a new plan, after they transform the old one in housing for ppl at big big money.

Still no new tannoy plan in UK now and a few year have past, All new Tannoy are not made in UK…!

but the engineer will be Fyne!
