Anyone using Paul's Maestro Music management system?

Happy Cake Day, @Paul! Glad I got a chance to see you in Vienna!

I’ve been having a minor problem for a long time that I don’t recall anyone bringing up. It occurs at the end of each album. After the last track plays, instead of stopping, Maestro continuously plays more tracks from the album. The timing bar, on the bottom, continues to show the name of the last track of the album. Sometimes, when I’ve let it go for a while, it repeatedly plays the last track. It has never stopped, I always have to hit pause. It would be nice if it either stopped or goes on to play similar music, showing the Artist and track, with the ability to go to that track/album (like Roon).

There are still gremlins hiding in Maestro. I have experienced unexplained stoppages, repeats, and occasionally pause in the middle of a song. I just could not predict when would any of that will happen yet. Local files were fixed, then they were not. They run slower again.

Oh well, I will wait. Maybe even until tablet version comes out, and I hope it will not bring in new gremlins.

So, I am running Roon now, and it sounded just fine in my system with their latest FW update.

I’ve experienced big improvements in Maestro. It seems like requests for fixes have quieted down the last two days, so I thought this was a good time to bring this issue up, since it’s not a major one. I am now using Maestro exclusively, having terminated my Roon contract and traded in my Roon server for a new PMG Preamp. Also, I just changed from the trial to a paid subscription. I’m all aboard and am anxious for the iPad version to be released.

Yes. All these things are happening to me. Local files - I have over 36,000 of them - when I try to even browse them in Maestro - reduces it to an unusable speed - something like 60 seconds between clicks. I’m using Windows and 184. I just opened Maestro no problem there. Then I clicked Local file - Artists. It took 60 seconds to load! Now I click on an artist - it takes another 60 seconds to respond. I have 3373 artists and 7216 albums. I RESET and loaded only a few folders to my library and it all worked fine. The more files I loaded the slower and slower it goes. I have 2 machines with Windows and exactly the same problems are happening on both of them. BTW Roon, Audirvana, and JPlay (yes, I’m trying all ATM) have no problem with my library which is on a network drive. I must say though, on my system Maestro when it works sounds the best by a long shot, followed by Audirvana and JPlay with Roon by far the worst.

I am experiencing a different situation since I no longer have a large local file. Over time, I switched to Qobuz being my primary source of listening. I don’t want to get in the way of Paul fixing your problems, so I am happy for him continuing to focus on local files. My issue can wait and I can still enjoy Maestro in the meantime.

I’m having the same problem. Usually I listen to albums; start to finish. Whole album plays as expected, but after last track Maestro repeats this track, exactly as you describe.

Also if I use the que and clear upcoming tracks, they disappear in the que, but Maestro ignores the clearing and continues with the next track in the original que. Not a big deal, but would be nice to have fixed.

Don’t recall if I have reported this in the support section to Paul, can’t check right now, because Maestro won’t start. I’m on an Intel Mac, Maestro is version .184

Wait. What? I am probably reading emails in the wrong order and you might have already sent me a note, but you’re on 184 and Maestro won’t start? This is a big deal and I need to know. Can you email me? How did you get to 184 without it opening? I am confused. I am on 184 and it works great. We need to remedy this.

184 on Windows just crashed for me and I’m getting this no matter how many time I reinstall: Maestro couldn’t start

There was a problem loading the app. A quick relaunch usually fixes it.

If this keeps happening, reinstall from maestrodesktop.com/download.

Try again
Just tried it on my other Windows machine and exactly the same problem.

Can you try it now and let me know if it works again?

Yes! You fixed it  Thank goodness. I had to resort to listening to Audirvana for a few minutes there

Horrors! Thanks for letting me know. Please, anyone else having a problem email me right away. I am trying to balance this new build and get it stable enough so I can submit to Apple.

Just checked again, but Maestro just opens the screen and the circle in the middle keeps spinning - nothing else. I always use the download page for updates. Tried the update button in the app once and it updated to the silicon version, even though I’m on an Intel Mac.

Maestro, more often than not, at startup goes into a loop saying session ended Login? in a window that flashes on and off continuously. Hitting the Login button accomplishes nothing.
I spent an hour with it two days ago getting it working. I am not in the mood today.
Huge Sigh.
I have never encountered a program that I have to manually remove from my machine and then reinstall it to get it working. Every time I close it. If I close it I have to face the entire process again.

Log sent. Doh!

Lars — found it, and it’s specific to your machine: at some point the in-app updater gave you the Apple Silicon build by mistake (that’s my bug, noted).

Reinstalling the Intel version fixes the app itself but not Maestro’s background service, which keeps a separate copy that my version check can’t tell is the wrong kind.

Manual fix, two minutes:
(1) Quit Maestro.
(2) In Finder: Go menu → Go to Folder… → paste ~/Library/Application Support/Maestro → delete the item named MaestroService.app (just that one).
(3) Restart your Mac.
(4) Install fresh from Maestro (Intel version) and launch. It should come up normally. If it doesn’t, send me the support log and I’ll dig personally. And thank you — your report exposed two real bugs I’m fixing for everyone.

Paul

I’m now at v184 on Windows.

I WIPED and rescanned my local files.

  • track order on DSD albums is still incorrect.
  • Track length (time) information on local FLAC albums is still missing
  • Still seeing the trace/debug output in the upper left corner of the display

Local file processing is definitely not ready for prime time. After rescan/rebuild local files display very slowly, getting ‘failed to load album’ messages.

Thanks Paul, that did it. Maestro is back. I’m back to enjoying some good music. Keep up the good work

Lars

Slow browsing + “failed to load album”: root-caused this week, and it wasn’t your files or your rescan — Maestro’s database on machines like yours answers queries in well under a second even at thousands of albums, but the display layer was trying to draw the entire catalog at once, which is what ate the time and triggered those load failures. The fix (drawing only what’s on screen) is being built right now and ships in a web update — meaning you’ll get it automatically, no reinstall, no rescan.

The debug text in the corner: that’s development output that leaked into the release — embarrassing, and it’s being removed in the same update.

DSD track order and missing FLAC track lengths: both confirmed as scanner/metadata bugs on my list for the local-files release that’s next in the queue after the current one. The wipe-and-rescan you did wouldn’t have helped either of these — the bug is in how the scanner reads them, not in your library’s state — so please don’t burn more time rescanning until I tell you a build actually contains those fixes.

Really appreciate your help and reports.

Can you try again now and let us know? The fix is live and no version change necessary.

Hi Paul, I just watched your daily chat on YouTube (as I do every day  ) and just out of curiosity I was wondering: will the guy you hire for testing Maestro also run tests on Windows systems, or is he only using Apple?
