Just noticed another pair of BHK600’s for sale at TMR.
These don’t show up often.
What are you waiting for then? Make it happen
They don’t weigh enough.
LOL
They weigh more than the M1200’s
But not more than a 333
I know nothing about that, boys, but I do know about those amps; they were mine, and they have pairs of excellent-sounding British-Mullard-made Mazda PCC189s in them… These remain the best-sounding poweramps I ever used to drive my Vandersteen 7.2s, which will be showing up at TMR very soon.
They were yours? Why the trade in if I may ask? I thought I had read nothing but positive on other threads. Thanks in advance!
The combined weight of the 600’s is 216 pounds. The 333 manual says it’s 112lbs (I think that’s inaccurate) but I’m sure it’s much less than 216lbs. $4000 savings for you also.
Those are nice amps and nice speakers. I have a Conrad Johnson GAT-S2 preamp feeding a Levinson 5302 amp that drives the FR20’s, and the DAC is a Grimm MU2. I am in music heaven and have finally found a synergy that I have no desire to change a single thing in my system (I somehow know that @scotte1 will laugh at this). (@paul172 and I text away from this forum a lot)
Would love to hear what’s next with your system.
“No desire to change” huh. The BHK600’s were a quantum leap over the 300’s I had. Better in every category (except weight ). A major step with the FR30’s. FR’s want and need good, clean, ample power. Hopefully your Levinson gets you there…but.
Yes, my amp could always be upgraded, but the smaller Levinson (270 watts into 4 ohms) does sound crazy-clean and crazy-open, with excellent dynamics and stronger bass than other amps that I have. It balances well with the GAT preamp.
It sounds crazy.
Last time I looked, 1000w is greater than 270w. Just messing with you, but size does matter and the FR Series gobbles it up.
We’ve talked about a lot about the MU2, PZ and Sakra bringing more music to the table. The 600’s stay true to the source but with much greater control and dynamics in the offering. I’m not saying they are end game and there are equally good A and AB amps. But, I haven’t seen many that I would consider sonic equals and with all those watts.
Oh, and they have tubes.
I discovered for myself that an amp’s sound driving moving-coil speakers is NOT the same as when driving electrostatic speakers.
The first ‘good’-sounding amps I heard this summer were the Pass class-A/B X260.8s; highly resolving in all ways and with a slightly warm tonal balance which I love and require… Let us call this quality level 8 on the 10 scale… I then bought the BHK600s and found somewhat increased levels of quality–rez, tonal balance, ease, musicality; the sound was better than ever and I thought it simply couldn’t get better!.. Let us call the BHKs’ quality level 9…
Then, after reading Stereophile’s review of the Pass class-A XA60.8, especially John Atkinson’s 1%-THD power levels of 150 Watts into 8Ohms, 240 into 4, and 380 into 2, I had to hear them, especially after remembering how good the X260.8s sounded… I bought a new pair at our local dealer, USA Tube Audio, and SHAZAM!, I was in musical heaven… The massed violins sounded smoother AND more resolved, and other improvements were similar in level to those of the BHKs over the X260.8s… Power output was more than I needed–as in they would play louder than I could listen at, heat output was perfectly acceptable, and bingo I was musical heaven.
Do understand that my remarks apply only to my system with Sound Lab Majestic 745 speakers…
If I had kept the Vandersteen 7.2s, I’d still have the BHK600s.
I highly recommend the BHK600s to anyone driving moving-coil loudspeakers, especially those with the beautiful Aspens and especially those who listen at high levels, even if only occasionally.
The Pass Labs XA 60.8 mass loaded with ingots of unobtanium?
Am guessing one could say “they seem nice” (Pass XA 60.8)
The active crossover, which has potential to degrade the sound (being an extra box in the signal path, and the box being 34 years old), also has a positive effect by reducing the power demand of the amp by not letting the amp even see the lower frequencies.
But yes, my 270 watts are just a bit less than your 1000 or 1200 watts, lol
Just nonmagnetic stainless steel… Seems I have a fetish about possibly vibrating panels, even if they’re made of heavy steel.
I guess anyone could say that, even if they haven’t heard them.
Pray tell–what is the substance…meaning…of your comment?
Those are seriously large panels! Congrats on the class A!
