So I had problems on one of my channels on the I2S bridge (static noise - no sound) in my a/v streamer. Problem appeared out of nowhere - channel worked fine before. Troubleshooting lead to diagnosis of defective channel on the bridge itself. Swapped out card and problem persisted.
Some more troubleshouting then revealed the problem was actually with the HDMI cable (nordost). I’ll be damned… Now I’m curious if this is a defective cable or a cable spec issue, like some folks are experiencing with USB cables.
Anyone used HDMI cables that did not work with an I2S source on the DS I2S input?

Thank you, Kevin – I had not heard of this company. As a Latin teacher I have to love the name! BTW, the link should be musicapristina.com (with an ‘a’ on musica).
The Musica Pristina A Cappella II digital music player does use an HDMI cable for its LVDS I²S output, and claims compatibility with several high ebd DACs, so it is possible that it is compatible with the PS Audio DACs with this input. It did take some careful reading and some interpretation of their product web page to glean this. Ultimately their statement in the description is to contact them to determine compatibility with your DAC. It would be interesting to find out if their I²S over HDMI is compatible with PS Audio’s implementation.

Well, that explains your name and maybe why I like your posts. My dad was a Latin teacher, as well.
One possibility which would require a bit of work, but which looks highly intriguing to me, would be figuring out a way to get the I2s outputs from a raspberry pi successfully talking to a DS. If I have any time this summer, I’m hoping to work on this project.
My previous googling on this topic had not revealed that anyone was so far along on this this project yet. However I’m glad to see that I simply hadn’t dug deep enough yet.
For the record I found another highly relevant link when investigating further this evening:
il Carletto: Could you please tell us which Linux distribution and/or streaming program you are running on your Pi? Also, does the program that you are using support streaming DSD either natively or via DoP?
pmc7027: Unless things have changed, Paul posted (years ago on DIY Audio) the LVDS over HDMI spec that PS Audio uses. Many of us went down this path to try to create some uniformity in external I2S. Some other companies use other methods.
magister: Thanks for catching the URL typo, and pointing it out. Exactly the type of thing I’d expect from a Latin teacher. (I studied it for 3+ years at an all male Jesuit high school in MD growing up.)
ryonlunch32: I’ll take a look at how we present compatibility to try to make it easier to determine. I can tell you with certainty that as of last model year, we’re compatible with PS Audio. So unless they’ve recently changed, we’re good.
schuerholzklump238: Technically, resistors and capacitors should also be considered “computer parts.” The trick is isolating the computer parts from the audio parts… and using I2S to talk to DACs.
