Coronavirus noticeboard

Miniatur Wunderland is one of my “one day” destinations. I may end up just living in the nooks and crannies of the layout.

My wife and I, with the family of one of her daughters, are due to visit New Orleans next week. Trump’s ban on travel from Europe today came as a bit of a shock, but the UK seems to be excluded from it at the moment. I wonder if that loophole will be closed before we are due to leave. Not sanguine about the chances for the holiday at the moment. :frowning:

Hopefully you get to make your trip.

I still don’t understand the problem and worldwide panic from this new Bogeyman. It seems way overblown to me. I still compare the 650,000 yearly dead from the regular flu that no one wants to talk about. I just think it is Darwin at work and we maybe should back off just a little.

Sadly we are seeing many cancellations, postponements, and radical changes to how large gatherings are handled. I received an email this morning that ECAD 2020 (Explorers Club Annual Dinner) had postponed until 10 October. First time it’s been postponed or cancelled outside of wartime since 1905. It is the highlight of my year, and I am greatly saddened, but it’s only prudent with it’s international attendees. A pandemic is nothing to fool around with. Panic is not the answer but sensible and scientific strategies are the answer to mitigate the terrible outcomes that are possible, even likely, should it go on unchecked. Those of us in the high risk categories are counting on everyone to act in a thoughtful and caring manner to prevent what this could be.

And this is exactly the right attitude and understanding. Thanks for sharing. Your note says a lot. Canceled for the first time since 1905. Indeed, tough stuff but it’s better to not give the virus fuel until we can figure out a vaccine to snuff it out.

Well yes the panic is probably not helping, is purely selfish, and is denying those in low income any chance of doing their regular shop.
But for those of us who are immunocompromised it is a big deal - and galling to see folks washing their hands when they are at risk, but the rest of the time don’t bother despite repeated explanations of the daily risk they impose on us.

A German researcher from Kiel tonight presented a possible vacine. But it will take two years for it to be approved for humans. The program comes on NDR tonight German television

We are 5.603 million Danes the estimated number of first wave is 600000 infected - mortality is about 10 percent - they visit your hospital - transfer those numbers to the US. This affects everyone.

@Baldy: My sense is that a couple of the differences are: seasonal flus are generally a set of known entities for which we have vaccines, while this is not; and at this point the death rate is multiples of regular flu. So if this infects as MANY people as regular flu, many more will die.

However, this is NOT a known thing yet. Until it is over, we won’t know what percentage of people die (that percentage tends to go down over time so far), and how far it spreads. We simply have no idea how many people are walking around with it.

So erring on the side of Panic, generally not a good idea - erring on the side of caution seems like a smart approach. I suppose it gets into what one considers “panic”, how much the economics matter to you, whether you believe in science or other beliefs take precedence, etc.

My two cents as a non-medical observer.

@michael-denmark - that seems like someone’s “panic” numbers/estimates. 600k and 10% mortality? That is Factors of ten or 100 above anything seen so far, for both numbers.

All because some guy in China ate a bat or some bat poop on a piece of bat food. Dang it.

Please explain: …people hoarding toiletpaper???

Like mask-wearing, see…if you wrap your entire body in TP…boom! Protected!

Also many multinational corporations are planning on having the entire company dress as Mummies for Halloween.

Those are my two best guesses ; )

I questioned that too but someone informed me that the rational was that is you were quarantined in your house you don’t want to run out of toilet paper. Although with what I’ve seen some people stocking up is crazy. I really don’t think you need a three year supply…

It is making a lot of folks bat-shiz crazy.

There was certainly not this panic for other pandemics such as swine flu which killed almost 13,000 people in the US alone. This is making me feel batty.

That’s exactly where the term came from too.
There are some critters that we don’t need to eat or share food with for a lot of already known reasons. Bats are near the top of the list.

Looks like the whole world gets to take the summer off. Or something like that.

The only thing wrong with what I wrote is that out of 60000, about 6000 will die in Denmark if we do not break the first wave. You can find the new calculations on WHO’s page. As of Monday, we have actually introduced “state of war” Eighty percent of those infected will need health care assistance. 15 percent will be admitted to regular hospital wards (approximately 8700) .5 percent (3000) will be critically ill and will need respirators. We expect a death toll of nearly 6,000 people.(
1 and second wave)

We have drive in test

Now comes the corona law on Monday: forced treatment and access to private homes without a court order …

We are in shock after we saw last night what actions are coming in the US so lack of action. You have only 100,000 respirators in your country, just one example. It will be a complete awakening for the United States and it is now in full swing with you. Take care of eachother.

We have one of the world’s best hospital systems in the world, free of charge for all citizens. The treatment guarantee has been waived for one year until further notice. Even cancer patients etc because of the infection danger etc and to break the first wave. This is fierce.

Sorry for my bad English…more love Michael Denmark
