The emphasis in US seems to be on Covid-19 as an economic problem first and a health problem second. It’s the opposite. It’s a health problem first and foremost, and it is causing an economic problem. Solve the first and you will take care of the second. Take two tax cuts and call me in the morning is not going to solve the problem.
Some places sanity still prevails over hysteria. Still FIGMO in TX
Dear DSO Patrons,
As the events continue to evolve, I wanted to give you an update from the DSO. Considering the new European travel ban in effect from midnight tomorrow, we will be in constant contact with conductors and artists to determine any program changes we need to make for the remainder of the season. We will have updates on this information for musicians, staff, ticket holders and the public next week.
This weekend’s concerts with Chris Botti will continue as scheduled. I thank you for your support.
Thank you for your support of the DSO.
Exactly.
Sanity?
It is a Symphony not a mosh pit.
We have no idea here the States how severe the problem really is, due to a lack of testing.
Coronavirus: US is failing on testing, says Fauci
The testing system for coronavirus in the US is currently failing, a top health official has admitted.
“The system is not really geared to what we need right now… let’s admit it,” said Dr Anthony Fauci from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Authorities in the US have come under fire for carrying out far fewer tests than many other affected countries.
There are currently more than 1,300 confirmed cases of the virus in the US.
President Donald Trump says the US has “a tremendous testing set up where people coming in have to be tested”. However, he has not given further details, and there has not been routine testing for the virus in the US.
Have a sane and delightful evening!
Seems like only yesterday this virus was being called “a hoax”. Oh wait, I think it was just yesterday.
The good news is that the UK stock market crash was not the worst ever. The South Sea Bubble was worse. That was 300 years ago.
A fascinating historical event.
A fun way to learn about the South Seas Company and the early London stock exchange is to read David Liss’ wonderful historical novel A Conspiracy of Paper, set in 1720 London. A delicious read.
There was Tulip Mania in 1638, the details of which are unclear. Someone did some research recently to shine some light on those bulbs.
Thanks for that - topical reading - will Amazon deliver?
…and I though I was a bad punster…or is it punter🤷🏻♂️
I read it on a Kindle and obtained the eBook version through Amazon (the Kindle is a great gadget for travel reading).
Try this
My best was inadvertent when I was an elkin. I thought the lyrics for God Bless America were:
“Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with the light from a bulb.”
I must be the only person on the planet that still doesn’t understand the worldwide fuss about this new bug.
I was at the docs office this morning for a routine checkup and she said the entire medical system is bombarded with people who all think they have the new virus and are going to die within days. Really all they have is a cold or less but are wasting everybodys time and money.
You are confusing people panicking with the reality that we are in fact in a pandemic. It HAS to be jumped on. Research what the WHO and others are suggesting as commonsense guidelines. One is, don’t unnecessarily expose yourself to crowds. Sure - most people think about themselves, but with a 14-day incubation period, YOU could be bringing it to the crowd. That’s part of why this is serious.
I decided not to go to the Dwight Yoakam show in Denver last night, despite the time I saw him 30+ years ago being one of the better shows I’ve ever seen, and being up for a Bakersville fix.
We as Americans bristle at anyone suggesting we can’t do what we want - a restriction of our freedom.
Last week there were no confirmed cases in CO. Then some visitors from CA brought it here (probably amongst other sources). It is doubling every day or so (though I gather it tends to spread exponentially), and that is just the confirmed cases from the tiny subset of people who have actually been tested.
As of yesterday, there didn’t appear to be any confirmed cases in Boulder county, and I wasn’t about to be the moron who brought it here, whether it affected me or not. Though I’m sure it is here in any case. We just had the Boulder Intl. Film Fest last weekend (with Robbie Robertson flogging the new Band movie); a Major University is here (fortunately still pre Spring Break)…etc.
You nailed it. It’s not about you or me becoming ill, it’s more about not becoming a vector. This is a new virus that everyone on the planet is susceptible to. There is no immunity yet, nor a vaccine. This implies the infection rate will be some multiple of the typical flu rate. That coupled with the higher fatality rate, which has not been quantified but appears to be some multiple of the flu fatality rate, results in hundreds of thousands of deaths globally. The math does not look good on this. Here is a site run by Johns Hopkins which shows the growth of confirmed cases and deaths. It appears that Italy and Iran data are no longer available.

Sorry - spoke too soon. We have a case at CU🤷🏻♂️
