I use a Steve McCormack DNA-1, Ultra 21 amplifier with the MK2 as the DAC/preamplifier. There is a switch on the back of the SMc amplifier that allows me to remove the static if using XLR cables. Have you tried using RCA cables? I believe the static issue comes from an impedance mis-match issue when using XLR cables.
With the Classe Delta Stereo it happens on both SE and Balanced. Less so on SE without the balanced setting activated on the MKII, but when you activate the 4v balanced on the SE output of the MKII it’s the same static as the XLR
I believe it is an impedance mismatch with my Classe Delta as well. It does it both with XLR and RCA, although it’s quieter with RCA, but I lose the 6db of dynamic range to balanced inputs give. But yea, running single ended it’s still there but half as loud.
Do you know what the gain of the Classe amp? Is it more than 30.5 db? How high of sensitivity are your speakers?
I believe the Classe’ Delta is 29db gain. Also, my speakers are a true 97db sensitive.
Your speakers are very high sensitivity. The amp is not that high. What puzzles me is you said you did not have the noise with the mk 1 but do with the mk 2.
I cannot imagine an impedance mismatch causing noise.
Correct.
When using the MKI as a pre amp there was no “Static”.
It is not a hum, like a ground issue.
Also, an interesting observation, when I pause the music the static goes away.
For instance, when a song ends and another begins, in that few seconds in between signals the static stops.
Also, the statics volume is the same regardless of the DS MKII volume, whether it is 1 or 100 it remains the same.
When moving from balanced to single ended outputs the static remains, but is about half as loud.
When using balanced the static is clearly and significantly audible from the listening position and can be heard over the music until you get to about 40+ db.
When using single ended out of the direct stream its almost tolerable, but still there. Of course the balanced setting is off for the RCA output.
Yea, I have no clue really, just what some others have been suggesting to me.
I would suggest having the mk 2 checked out. It should not be doing that.
Funny thing also, I have a few in my discord who report the same depending on amplifier pairing.
I think this was the only reason I have not returned it yet, as I was somewhat convinced that it was just a pairing issue vs the DS MKII being bad.
I don’t like that the noise stops when the music does. That is what makes me suspicious. I know it is hard to give it up but I think it is worth getting it checked out. That is nor normal. My B&W 800 Matrix are 93 db sensitive. My BHK 250 IS 30.5db sensitive and I have no noise issue without the BHK Preamp in the chain. In fact tube rush is more noticiable with the ear placed by the tweeter than the quiet of the mk 2 direct.
Roger that!
I really appreciate your feedback and help and I will call PSA today and get moving.
Thank you! And I will report back… ![]()
I hope they get to the bottom of the issue and correct it for you. You are currently unable to enjoy how special the mk 2 is and even more so with Blue Sky loaded.
It sounds to me like something is wrong with the data stream getting to the fpga. I would suspect something with the input board. Only going by my intuition. They should be able to detect and correct the issue.
Well, I discovered the same exact issue running balanced interconnects from MK 2 directly into my BAT amplifier (fully balanced design).
The hash only occurs when playing music and is unaffected by altering MK 2 volume settings. Inserting a preamp resolves the issue.
Did not have this issue with my MK 1.
Same Same… Thank you for sharing. ![]()
I have an email and two voicemails into PSA, fingers crossed.
I had a similar noise issue on both balanced and unbalanced connections, but I use a preamp with my MK2. PS Audio sent me an updated beta version of software to fix it.
There is something wrong with the DAC. I have modifield cd players to be transports with reclocked outputs. I came across a Sony Changer that had a dual clock set up. When I installed the isolated stable clock module in it the output through the reclock board was fine but when you tried to use the internal D to A analog output there was static. This was due to clock issues related to the synchonization of the master clock and the secondary clock. Once you said the static went away between tracks I knew something was up with the dac.
