I’m running 173 with 2.3.3 and not having any issues. I believe 173 was included with the email that gave us 178.
Okay I will go look for that. Thanks for voicing your 173 opinion and the heads up on where to find it.
Most of the time there’s not a strong link between the FPGA version and the control processor version. We try to warn people explicitly when there might be. Usually you just lose the more recent features when one or the other is older. Right now you can mix and match, just don’t go crazy about bugs that don’t exist in the current versions.
FWIW, I found Antero took several days of burn-in. It went from fairly strident mids and top with less depth to a considerably better balanced presentation and imaging. I initially thought I had cable and fuse issues from recent switches to Gen II Iconoclast and an SR Purple, but I stayed the course and kept these changes and let the MKII be the variable. Things sound pretty good now as full bodied voices and instruments are better defined in space. I can’t say that it is all the way back to 173’s initial magic and I could be biased because it was so good from the start. Time and resistance to compensate could be your asset, oh King of Tweeks.
Above was for @Vmax. Time to go to bed.
I found the 173. I apologize but have to go backwards. I even tried tuning ring changes and all has been worse. I thought 179 was the bees knees at first. But my whole system seems tilted with even more burn in. Perhaps the 179 is what the FR speakers need with the passive radiators. I have had speakers with passive radiators and they just get it in the bass region. I just can’t take upper tilt it is delivering on my old school line arrays. Its like the my eight 12 inch woofers checked out there is so much upper energy. I even played some Boz and the bass was checked at least 6 dB to the upper frequencies.
All I can say it ain’t even close to being right by my paradigm.
You get extra points if you can stand more than 30 seconds with 179 and this version of this song.
I have my cable and tweak playlist. Damn. I can say Much is annoyingly bad for a system that could play any song and make you sing along. 179 truly gutted it.
The MKII running 179 with a pair of Mullard CCA’s in the Pre is liquid.
Recommended.
Just FWIW, the frequency response of both FPGA releases are identical, in fact the bits coming out of the FPGA in the two releases are identical. There is no measurable tilt either way. The differences are in noise below the level of the resolution of CDs. That’s not denying what you are hearing, but it is pointing out that the differences are probably from different room interactions, different speaker toe in interactions etc. And they may indeed fade with more burnin or not. We can be exquisitely sensitive to barely measurable noise, but not with any predictable or repeatable results system to system, person to person.
I tried something and killed my bass DSP. I suffer from too big of speakers in a 400 square foot room. If I let the bass run normally it is acceptably closer at reducing the upper tilt I hear at lower volumes. But it is muddy thick bass. I was hoping not to have to reposition the speakers. I will try 273 first. If that doesn’t help it will be perhaps moving speakers closer to the wall or narrowing. I don’t run tow in. That will be the last ditch effort.
Thanks for clarifying the frequency response output level. Really does have me scratching my head
I got my repaired Mk2 back after one day at PS Audio. (I live in Fort Collins) and the experience of having to listen to the Mk1 for a while was interesting. You get spoiled fast with the Mk2. I think it sounds even better 179? then before. On I2S only but it sounds wonderful. My impressions of the difference have changed. The Mk2 sounds bigger (sound stage) and way more detailed in both very high frequencies (strings, bells, etc) as well as the bass. I actually hear new instruments in the background I didn’t before. The original problem of small static pops between bands is still there but I dont care. Congrates Ted for a wonderful DAC
Could you explain what you mean by static pops. Is this a DAC or transport issue? I’m running the MK2 with PST I’m hearing static pops every time the track changes.
@Vmax, I keep forgetting you do not like Purple fuse. Have you ever had SR Orange fuse in the system before? My recollection is it sounded thinner at higher frequencies with less “sharp” details (for lack of better word in early morning). It could work in your system. I just want to threw it out there.
I didn’t like M-1 in my system but your system is obviously different than mine. However, the reason I didn’t like it was it gave too much energy to certain frequencies when I ran 178.
After my round of golf I will switch the Purple and M-1 between MK2 and PST to see if I like it better now. Are there testers like 179 with M-1 out there?
Edit: vmax, when you said you hear too much energy in upper frequencies, do you mean it sound too bright or too full? My suggestion was assuming you’re in the latter case obviously.
Morning everyone. First, I want to thank all the beta testers for their hard work and dedication to the task. What a wonderful group of people. Amazing.
Second, I think it’s probably time to close this phase of the beta testing if everyone’s ok with that. We can start a new thread about the MK2. I am planning on reaching out to Elk later this morning and locking this one down.
We’re pretty happy with where we’re at. I’ve just spent the last few days auditioning the units we’re readying for shipping (with Antero loaded), and they sound remarkable.
As we move forward, if any of you have issues or need assistance, you will, of course, be given priority (though with the holidays, we might not be so quick to answer).
Again, thank you all so very much for your time and dedication to helping sort out issues and get the DSMK2 up to where we needed it to be. What a great product and what a great group of tireless people. I am forever grateful.
And, happy holidays!!!
I have never tried the orange fuse. Yes the purple fuse distorts the saxophone. The current version of 179 has found me pulling out these three voicing curves. It is a band aid I don’t like to use. Thus my plan is to try the stock fuse again. If that is a no go then revert back to 173 software.
I have been bouncing between these three eq curves. Unfortunately some muffling happens. Probably music 1 is the best.
