DirectStream pricing, trade-ups and options

I will be watching for your comments on SQ and musicality with great interest Gordon

Well, I am all set up, all contacts cleaned, network tweaked and loaded up on local micro-brew and chocolate chip cookies.

Still awaiting some DSD/PCM test files if someone has some.

I did download some from 2l PCM-16/44.1 and 24/192 as well as DSD when available in the same content.

I believe they use DXD so I still do not have any “pure” DSD.

I am especially anxious to hear what it does with my PCM library.

I have a lot of CDs from the 80s and I wonder if today’s stampings are better than they were then.

More Worms.

Who cares what Gordon’s gonna hear? I want mine!

@alekz

You are very welcome to come over and audition it with me.

Bring your sleeping bag, it may be crowded.

I have a lot of CDs from the 80s . . .

I think CDs are the best place to start, especially those you know well.

We expect DirectStream to sound great with excellent media. The bigger question is what does it do with lesser 44/16, etc. This is where a good DAC shines. A great DAC sounds superb on everything, rendering the differences between 44/16, 96/24 and DSD much smaller than on lessor equipment.

I have the kit on order based on Paul's report, Wglenn's reactions, and Ted's explanations/impressions. Another report can't hurt. :)

+1. You want to start, IMO, with the music you know well, in the form you know well (CD via PWT, streaming via Bridge etc). The impression I think most will want is what well known music sounds like - and how it is different - compared to the best source most of us have in common. The PWD Mk.II.

I can Dropbox Patricia Barber and Opus DSD albums to you in case you are interested.

Those Opus Showcase DSD samplers are outstanding, perfect for testing the DirectStream. Mine are waiting patiently. B-)

I have a couple Opus SACD’s and LP’s and love the recording quality and the music. Peder Uglaas is the artist.

IMO, the Patricia Barber trumphs the Opus one on SQ.

It is better than Modern Cool and is recorded from a live concert venue:

None are DSD*2 though (single DFF).

Add Donald Fagen and I take a plane to join the session with you. I'll bring saucisson, bread, cheese and red wine if I can pass the frontier :)

Target arrival for my tester is March 10th.
Please pray.

Gordon's silver DirectStream is going through testing today. I will be listening to it later today and if it is representative of the reference unit, it'll ship today, Monday at the latest.

Of course Gordon has to live in Canada. He's not decent enough to live in Colorado which would make it easier on us. But we forgive him.
O:-)

Get ready to rumble.

I have this on long OOP MoFi hybrid SACD and it smokes. Actually, all of Barber's MoFi SACD hybrids are superb.

Looking forward to downloading this version to play DoP over the PWT to DS and compare.

My black DS is on order, like all of our DS' DAC's are (excepting Gordon).

@Pat: Remember, it’s March. You’ll have to walk between the raindrops to get to G’s door.

I can be "had".
I'm good with a screw driver, sledge and willing to learn more about hammer drills.
<):)

We could certainly make a party out of it.

I can sleep 30 at my office/loft if you bring sleeping bags.

Beer and cookies supplied by me.

Please pray.

If Gordon's option was Direct Stream in Colorado or none, my guess he'd be moving very soon, even if it was to a temporary apartment . . .

streets still works said: even if it was to a temporary apartment . . .

nope. It would be in room#1 with the Infinities, my sleeping bag and Dennis's beer fridge.
