Three tier rack and four components, so I have to stack the DSD MkI on top of the PST. Because I didn’t want to damage the top of the transport I’ve been using Sorbothane footers, which I had always suspected was not ideal, but had no idea how much it held my system back. Last night I dug through a stash of old tweaks and found some ceramic cones and cone cups and swapped out the three Sorbothana footers for four ceramic cones in combination with the protective cups, sat down and hit play, and my jaw hit the floor.
You know how you can’t image how your system can sound any better until it does.
Every parameter of the sound improved immensely. The noise floor was dramically lowered revealing a wealth of new found musical information, from an expanded and more holographic soundstage with pinpoint imaging, to a deeper, taughter bass with more texture. And the improvements didn’t stop there. Increased transparency, low level details emerging from a blacker background, improved micro and macro dynamics, and a truer to life tonality. If I had to estimate the level of improvement, I’d say it was a solid 20 to 25 %, and all from experimenting with what I already had on hand.
I couldn’t tear myself away from listening and ended listening to one CD after the next until the wee hours of the morning.
Next upgrade, upgrading all of my footers and getting a new four tier rack.
