DMP vs. Oppomod I2S Board?

No - the software to decode MQA is only in the Bridge streaming card.

I’m not certain that this is correct in this context Ted. Clearly this is true in the case of the DS DAC in general though.

However I believe that the Oppo 203 is supposed to be able to perform some level of MQA unfolding. So the Oppomod board very well may be intercepting an already unfolded MQA signal which it would then send-on to the DS. Clearly such a signal would not be optimized for the DS, since it will not have been optimized for the 203s internal DACs. But it should still be sending an unfolded signal, I would think.

I can’t seem find the thread anymore. It seems like it must have been moved or something… But there was discussion a few weeks ago by somebody who was claiming the Oppomod had fixed their DSD channel reversing issue on the latest versions of the Oppomod board. Can anyone verify that he was not just blowing smoke, but that the new versions actually do not reverse the channels on SACDs?

I responded to you in the original thread -here is the link for anyone else who wants to follow…

Am I reading correctly that you think that the OCXO clock upgrade was the single most significant of the Oppomod upgrades you did?

And you clearly noticed the improvement of adding the clock to sound coming from your I2S card? Correct?

The addition of the clock gave more video performance than audio, I thing my DS dac disregards the incoming clock?

Huge jump in picture quality.

What surprised me was the addition of the silver power cable from the main Oppo board to the linear PSU.
Expecting a small bum in audio quality, but was surprisingly a large step up.

Makes sense I s’pose, given it improved the supply to the main board, and everything upstream of it would benefit.

Did you notice any difference to the sound sent via I2S when you installed the Linear Power Supply?

Yeah,
The linear power supply made a big improvement over the stock switch mode supply fitted to the Oppo.
A culmination of improvements, some greater than others, and every one worth it.

A reminder of what I did with my Oppo 203.

Do you of any online videos or step by step pictures on how to do the Oppomod I2S card installation? I would like to get an idea on how difficult this could be. Thanks.

@ gazjam, @ fdreed, @ VEMANOEL, @ tmitchmd, and @ kevjed,

Sorry for spamming the lot of you but I wanted to draw the attention of a bunch of Oppomod I2S users to my question. We’ll start with the fact that both the stereo and multi-channel source and pre-amplification front ends occupy the same gear rack in my big rig.

I’m wondering whether it would be awkward to share my OppoMod (LPS-SE, disc stabilizer, and IEC upgrades) 203 with my stereo DirectStream DAC via a new OppoMod I2S card for stereo only SACD/DVD-A playback? However, the 203 is already doing duty as the Multi-Channel digital source for my Meridian 861v4/621 pre-processor/HDMI switcher combo via HDMI. I should also add that for multi-channel I have to specify in the 203 settings that the Oppo outputs all high-res material as PCM in order for my Meridian prepro to accept it. Meridian processors will accept up to 24/192 PCM but won’t accept native DSD.

Do any of you have experience with this? Would doing so require a bunch of setting changes in the Oppo each time I switched from stereo to multi-channel?

Not sure I can directly help, as I only use my Oppo 203 as a 2 channel i2s Roon endpoint into my DS Dac.

You CAN output DSD of course, so would this then mean its possible to output multichannel vira the Oppo’s i2s output into your Marantz?

The Player can certainly read the multichannel stuff from the disk, in lieu of anyone with your exact same circumstances, if it were Me I’d be emailing Jahong at Oppomod and asking him.

My experience he’s a really helpful guy who cares about his Customers, and will give you an answer if he can.

Thanks for the reply @gazjam. Hopefully some of the other Oppomod I2S owners in the group which I flagged will have more direct experience.

Like gazjam, I only use the Oppo 203 as 2 channel I2S and can’t comment on multichannel use… sorry.

Thanks any way @fdreed & @gazjam. I’ve taken gazjam’s advice and emailed Dr Lee Jaehong at Oppomod directly with my question.

Keep us up to date how you get on!

After Dr. Jaehong graciously answered all my email questions, I ordered an I2S card last night. As a result of the discussion here on these forums, mine will come customized with the 5v DC power on pin 18 disconnected.

Congratulations, I have been thinking about doing this mod also. I remember somewhere along the line I got some information that the I2S mod is not applicable to the 205. Do you know if that’s true.

Please keep us updated on how it is working out.

The Oppomod site currently only lists an I2S option for the BDP-103 and UDP-203 players @huang. Reach out to Dr Jaehong on the Oppomod site. He got back to me within a day.

I think the 205 is “too new” to be able to apply the mod. Jaehong will verify I’m sure. I bought a fully modified 203 from him and am happy with it. It seems like it took a month or more to make it to my mailbox due to various holdups in shipping.

Thanks, I have a brand new in the box 205 and with the crazy prices they are getting I’m looking for a reason to keep it. I have a 105D which is fine for movies and ripping SACD.
