DoP output from an OPPO

I get a brief squeal when the SACD ends. It also happens if I press stop during the playing of the SACD.
Anyone else have this problem?

When the SACD quits the Oppo keeps sending crap for a little as the clock frequency wanders away. Here I hear a brief click - not a squeal, but I'm not surprised if there's a squeal. I haven't seen any other device than the Oppo that send crap when at the end of an SACD like that. But I have seen the clock rate wander wildly on a Sony DVP-S9000ES when a SACD stops. When I get a moment I'll see if I can detect the clock starting to wonder quickly enough to avoid squeals, clicks, pops, etc.

I downloaded a DSD file and put it on a usb stick. it played properly on the Oppo.

The Direct Steam indicated DSD 64.

Somehow I was not expecting it to work but was pleasantly surprised when it did.

Why wouldn’t it work? He sells it as a DoP capable board.

I did not doubt the board could do it.

i did not realize that the Oppo would handle it.

I see. To my knowledge the Oppo has always played DSD files from USB storage just fine.

My DS shows PCM 176.4 / 24 bit in that case.

I have the DoP board. How are your onboard switches set?

The one that matters for DoP is switch 5 being ON. You probably want switch 6 and switch 7 OFF. (Be sure to count 1 thru 8 if you can’t see the labels.)

Thanks Ted!

problem solved, it shows DSD now.

I am enjoying SACDs with Oppo/Vanity/DS a lot.

So, Ted, does the DoP from the Oppo into the DS sound better than PCM(non DoP) SACD from the Oppo? Do you gain in sound quality enough to justify cost of the board for the Oppo?

Your question is a little ambiguous - When playing SACDs on the Oppo with no add on Vanity board you can only get digital over the HDMI connection.

If you are comparing the Vanity board with DoP support against without DoP support I don’t believe there’s a cost difference.

Ted, what exactly is passed over the HDMI? As I understand it it is not useable by the DS (or any other DSD DAC), but for curiosity’s sake, I’d like to know what it is and why it can’t be used. My apologies for asking what could be a dumb question, but I’ve never seen a detailed answer only “you can’t use the data over HDMI”.

Howdy - Digital Rights Management (DRM) is the root of these issues. SACDs by license can’t have their digital high res versions ever available unencrypted on a wire. HDMI has a protocol for encrypting the data and hence is allowed to pass encrypted high res DSD. Unfortunately licensing HDMI is prohibitively expensive (let alone the hardware to receive and decrypt the DSD) so most audio only DACs don’t deal with it.

Lots of OPPO users on these post and I’ve added several components to maximize PS Audio DS DAC /Hi Rez music quality. Hydra Z for I2s etc. As for the OPPO I run into DSD/ Hi Rez limitations . etc.l Classe SSP-800 no DSD support over HDMI. No SACD over co ax. etc. The biggest improvement to music with OPPO was an upgrade I did with “The Upgrade Company” While it can’t change OPPO limitations it made a massive difference as to sound quality of any music/video play through OPPO 105D. Wider sound field, crisper overall music from source. Video showed great improvement as well. Even improved the Darbee video upscaler.

It is a great “bang for the buck” as I strive for maximum quality from my audiophile imvestments.

Classe A/V rec./pre amp/ Classe amps/ B & W 802D speakers. OPPO 105D/ Aries streamer connected to Audiobyte HydroZ/ Ps Audio DS DAC.

101_gifNice to see that I am not alone with Aries, Hydra Z and the DS I2s.

Have you considered the ZPM http://audiobyte.net/products/hydra-zpm

While you may be reluctant to spend the money and try, you will find that running an a modded Oppo analog into Classe preamp, cannot hold a candle to running Oppo with Vanity digital out board into the DirectStream. I say this based on personal experience - I have tried every signal path under the sun, owned two Oppo Vanities, a high caliber analog player (Marantz UD9004) and even owned some pieces modded by the upgrade company myself.

[nested quote nipped]

I have an -800 yes the DAC is average but found the analog pretty good, much better than a $6000 Audio Research I demoed. But I also have the 103 Vanity ready to install so sounds like I should move it to the top of my to do’s.

Yes. I think you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise. I hope you have the DoP capable HD version of the Vanity board that Ted uses, because the “Lite” version does not work with the DS>

Don’t have Lite, it’s same as Ted’s I believe.

Got my 103HD DoP bd running yesterday, playing the stereo layer, wonderful sounding and much nicer than the same redbook tracks ripped to my Synology. Now if I just had a stack of three DS as some of you…

i have a NAIM NDX DAC and word is they are going to be doing a DSD upgrade, would I be able to use it for my sides ? It has a coax input.
