I sure like mine in my headphone system (Edcor transformers, analog board, Farad Super 3).
Tragic.
The Mk1 is beautiful dac. I lived with one for 5 years. I must confess that I am mighty impressed with my new Mk2 APS transformers. I remember that the Perfectwave dac was nice. I am glad I started with my Perfectwave Memory Player and Perfectwave dac back in 2013. This forum has been extremely helpful to me in my audio journey throughout the years.
I replaced MK1 with MK2 and the new DAC was clearly better. APS mod made a very noticeable improvement over the stock. The last two FW updates again improved the SQ by a mile. There is little doubt MK2 APS is a much better sounding DAC to me.
I agree
I know this is going to sound craycray on this forum, but when I listen to my modded MK1, I never feel like I’m missing something. And I never feel compelled to spend the money to find out if I am.
Hi Ron
There’s nothing wrong with a Mk1 dac. It’s a good dac especially when modded. Some claim it’s sound when modded to be better than the Mk2.
As was once or twice said on WKRP in Cincinatti: “Names Les! I NEED NAMES!”
I enjoy my modded Mk 1 but I think my unmodded Mk 2 sounds better.
I pretty much feel the same way, don’t feel like I’m missing anything. But every once in a while the nagging upgrade bug gets a hold of me.
If your Mk1 is functioning without fault then just stick with it. The Mk2 is nicer in my experience and opinion but other people may prefer the Mk1. It’s a good sounding dac especially modded. There is a mint condition Mk2 on Marketplace for $2700. That is the best price I have seen.
That bug has cost me a lot of money.
Your system is very nice! It must have cost a little money.
The DSD Mk2 APS is very nice!
I notice that the second hand price of an APS modded Mk1 is more expensive than the price of a second hand Mk2. Is APS signature modded Mk1 better than the Mk2? I had a version 1 fully modded Mk1 with a Keces P3 external power supply which I enjoyed but due to maintenance issues I decided to purchase an APS modded Mk2 which I am delighted with. I just wonder if the fully modded version 2 Signature APS modded is worth $800 more than a Mk2. I really liked my modded Mk1 but I really like my Mk2.
I found that after 5 days I required a reboot to get the sound back to normal. After 5 days the sound went a little flat. Does anyone else notice that they require reboot their Mk 2 periodically. Since I don’t suspect a problem with the dac that it must be my unstable ac despite the fact that I have three dedicated ac lines to my music room and despite the fact that I am using a Keces IQRP 3600 power conditioner. I read that it is not abnormal to have this issue but no one else on this forum seems to claim to have noticed this issue.
So you’re having the same issue with the MKII as you did with the MkI. So I guess that means it not a DAC problem, the culprit lies somewhere else. Not sure how rebooting would solve an AC issue though.
I’ve read a lot already and Ted Smith when he was around told me that the problem was probably due to certain ac conditions. I suppose that the ac in my place is not the best. I have read however that my problem is not that uncommon. There are many who reboot as an act of regular maintenance. The dac still will sound okay but loses a certain magic when enough digital garbage fills in the dac FPGA.
I did not have the “flat sound” issue for the past year at all. MK2 APS pretty much sounded the same day after day. But prior to Gryphon PowerZone conditioner I had a PSA P15 generator, and I remember every few days the music would turn less involving. There is a button on P15 (do not recall what it is called), and pushes it will revive the system.
That is the issue. Every few days the sound becomes less involving. The button on the P15 is like a reboot. It’s not a serious problem and it’s very common. I will just reboot when the sound becomes less involving. I love the Mk2.
At one point I started experiencing a somewhat flat sound and congested midrange with my MK1, and after troubleshooting for a few days discovered that the Power Plant multiwave had been switched off. Amazing the difference that feature makes.
