A huge win for everyone involved!
Chris, I cannot find the right thread to ask this question. Whatâs the thread size for the footers for RF30? I put in the order for a pair, and I already think about tweaking them with some after market footersđ
Congratulations Donald, Youâre probably now making your decision in the endgame.
It seems that you have been misled into something again by this terrible forum.
It wasnât me.
I think Luca is the weakest link in his chain with his newly acquired speakers and impressions of the speakers involved. And Al with his approval of the great FR speakers. And maybe Iâm a bit concerned with my comment that the FR 30âs driver selection is more than interesting. I also think the optics are good. Rounded at the bottom to make it look more delicate and square at the top so that the woman can put a flower pot on it.![]()
Cheap feet can also be found on Aliexpress. There are a lot of feet so you still have a field to play on. Last year I was at a demonstration where various feet were presented under large Piega speakers. Everyone had a greater or lesser influence on the sound. I think it also depends on the surface of the floor. Concrete, wood, stone. Is the surface solid or does it tend to swing, etc. But opinions and tastes also differed during the performance. Maybe you should first be patient and break in your great new speakers a bit and see in which direction you would like to refine the sound.
I checked again and different Harmonix feet were compared. With Spieks there were also differences depending on the saucer used. These sometimes made a big difference. Finite element feet with ceramic balls. You can also find similar ones on Aliexpress. In some cases you can choose between versions made of wood, aluminum and stainless steel. Stainless steel or ceramic balls. A friend made me the feet for my speakers that I can adjust in height to ensure a secure stand. Iâve been thinking about trying out other ones lately and took a look at Aliexpress.
Thank you! Your experience really helps! That Brass Mega footers look very interesting.
These are great inputs! I have a few footers with ceramic balls on hand so I can experience with them. I used different types under the components to great effect. Thanks!
We use an standard M8 x 1.25mm thread on all of our tower speakers. There re a number of aftermarket feet that use this but please let me know if you have any other questions.
I do like the foot we came up with for the FR10 a little better than our bigger speakers and so I was thinking about developing a larger version of it to make a rolling change for them but that hasnât happened yet.
I put those Mega footers under my rack also. Helps also with focus in the sound. The ones under my speakers compared with the stock spikes in reguards to the sonic presentation is quite startling! https://shop.mapleshadestore.com/Thread-On-Megafeet-For-Carpet_p_1231.html
I had them powder coated black and threaded for the Wilsons.
Thanks Chris! They probably need a few hundred hours of break in like others. So, I will have time to check out some footers.
They look great. Looks like you have some nice Stealth power cords hiding behind.
All thanks to Al, Luca into Stealth rabbit hole now, and he has a truck load of Dragons to trade inđ˘ I still like mine just fine, so far!
Those are actually SR Galileo SX speaker cables. I have a full loom of Galileo power cords also. Unbelieveable sound quality from these cables! You can even tune them with the supplied bullets to your taste.
Thatâs right. You post them before.
That sounds very interesting, Chris. I am maxed out on the height of the provided foot on the FR30.
Specifically, the rear ones are as high as I can get them, and the front ones are as low as can be, with the spikes removed. You actually made this happen when you were at my house. I have raised my listening position to get in alignment with the tweeters, but my chair on stilts is not ideal. I am approximately nine feet from the speaker.
If the new design provides better dampening and height adjustment, I am all in.
I second or third that interest on new feet. I am just now testing Herbies giant gliders on rear, and removing spikes on front to get proper alignment. This could help you get rid of those stiltsâŚ
The spike bases that were demonstrated and you actually heard a more precise sound were the Harmonix - RF-999Z Million Tuning Spike Base. Maybe you can find a cheaper alternative.
I would be much more interested in the inner workings of the speakers. Specifically which capacitors, coils and resistors are used. A few manufacturers offer special versions with Duelund Milflex, Jantzen capacitors. I upgraded my speakers to a duelund JDM Cu/Sn capacitor in the tweeter and am still thrilled with the increased performance. In the midrange I have had a Milflex kpcu-03 since last week. Now the midrange sounds suitable right down to the low tones. I have Mundorf ultra resistors and they sound much more genuine and transparent than the Supreme ones I used before.
I have hardwood floor on top of concrete slab. So, spike will not be idea. Herbies Giant glider looks interesting too.
The Mapleshades Mega Bass does not have M8 thread but M6. So, it may not be an option. Gaia Titan is very tall so it may not be ideal either.
I just looked at Aliexpress. There are various feet such as finite elements with balls and many more. The Harmonix are underlays.
While I agree that crossover parts affect the sound (sometimes significantly) I could easily more than double the manufacturing cost of our speaker with some of the boutique crossover parts you mentioned in the values that we use/need them. At PS, we try to keep a good value proposition, even at higher price points and itâs simply a case of that I would use those kinds of components sparingly because the money is better spent elsewhere for a given amount of performance (I would be putting even more into the drive units and enclosure first in a more expensive model than what weâre doing).
Guys like B&W do use some mundorf parts in their speakers but they have an incredibly minimalist crossover with only a few parts. In fact, other than the diffraction/directivity issues with the mid/tweeter mounting and lack of tweeter baffle/waveguide, this is, in my opinion, one of their biggest flaws. The have very shallow acoustic slopes and let a lot of cone breakup through on various models, causing some hardness in the midrange. This seems to be improved significantly with their better damped comtinuum cones.
Youâre welcome to mod your speakers if you want to, but, beyond a crossover schematic from us, youâll be on your own as itâs impossible for us to support the reengineering of the speakers on a case by case basis.
Yes, a good compromise has to be found somewhere otherwise the price will go through the roof. There are also only a few manufacturers that use Duelund. The customer base is getting smaller. Mundorf is pretty decent, but I would say that Duelund is in his one class. Without the Mundorf parts in the big B&W they would still sound the same as they did many years ago. B&W sounds decent, but itâs not perfect and there are some errors and sometimes it sounds tiring. Donald and the others here are certainly not making a mistake with the FR 30 speakers or the smaller models. Youâve already brought some pretty and well thought-out speakers onto the market.
