FR5 First Impressions in Ordinary Listening Spaces

Great tip on the “aquarium” gravel. Just received some from Amazon and as you said a 10lb bag for each stand was perfect! Thanks.

Is that like Blue Tack?

Similar. They both will do the job.

Have anyone of you compared FR5s to any Dynaudio bookshelf speakers?

I am very interested in FR 5s as my future speakers. I even talked to the local distributor, but they don’t have FR5s in stock or on display yet. I am currently using Dynaudio C1 speakers. When they were new, they were some of the best bookshelf speakers on the market in its price range (in my opinion) but that was many years ago and I want to move forward. What I’m looking for is more transparent and revealing sound while the musicality and finesse similar to the C1 sound will be preserved. My listening room is 4x4m (roughly 13x13 ft). I know, a square floor plan is generally a disaster for a listening room, but I did a lot of acoustic treatment to eliminate this problem. Here is my current setup (see picture):
Aurender N100H streamer, Innuos PhoenixUSB usb reclocker / Innuos PhoenixNET switch, Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC, Simaudio Moon 600i amp (or Gato Audio DIA400S amp).

My question (probably aimed to @Chris_Brunhaver and his educated guess) is. Can I consider the FR5 an upgrade?

Well, my concern would be that the FR5 are different but not necessarily a ton better.

You will get a a little lower bass extension and fuller bass voicing with the FR5. Also, our woofer has higher excursion than the dynaudio so bass output and macro dynamics should be a bit better.

However, if you listen to a lot of dynamic music, I might consider a small tower speaker like our FR10.

Thanks. Yes, I was thinking about the FR10 as well…

Step1 keep those beautiful stands. Step 2 Trade in the Dynaudio C1 step 3 purchase the FR5 Step 4 put FR5 on beautiful speaker stands and connect speaker wires. Step 5 send me a picture of that big smile on your face. Finally, i will shake your hand when we both meet in audiophile heaven.

Hi Chris, my listening room size is 13x18 my tenants above are complaining about the bass on the FR5 shaking the flooring my wife for the first time in 40 years said honey i love your speakers. Yes, your analysis is important but it’s too late you created a legendary stand mount speaker, and you have to live with it. It’s that good.

Actually, I’m very tempted to follow exactly these steps.
And I am glad you like stands designed and made by me

Hi in regards to the FR5 speakers my experience has been extremely positive but the results require excellent components to get the best. I have not discovered any weakness regardless of the type of music played. I am currently 64 years old so i have some experience under my belt however a younger person might have a different opinion. One last point your space is 13x13 perfect for these speakers they produce an incredibly huge soundstage. Have fun Huddy.

Hi all. The first pair of PS Audio FR 5 sold in Norway has now been in my livingroom for the last 4 weeks, and I consider these broken in now.
Have to say, I am really impressed by the sound from a speaker of this sice, bass goes deep and tight in my space, treble and midrange is very clear and focused in a wide and deep soundstage. No fatiguing artefacts even with music of lesser quality. Very musical speakers in my system
Higly enjoyable and recomended speakers.

My setup: Hegel H390 amp, Laiv Harmony ext, dac, Lumin U1 mini streamer with S-booster ext. powersupply, FR 5 on Dynaudio 20 speakerstands, and Tellurium Q ll black speaker cables.

Thanks Paul. Yes, these speakers sound really great in my system.
Synergy between amp/dac/streamer and speakers seems to be spot on. :+1:

Synergy is the key, as you well know. Nice when the speakers, at east, synergize easily with so many systems. I can’t tell you how, over the years, I have had to be so selective matching speakers and electronics and now thankful to make a product with such a wide synergistic window.

Completing synergistic research?!
